그는 "지역의 독점 구조가 깨져야 사회와 경제에 생기가 돌고, 청년들도 다시 돌아올 것"이라고 강조했다.
조 대표는 대구의 정치 현실에 대해 강도 높은 비판도 내놓았다. 그는 "지난 30여 년간 대구는 국민의힘이 장악해왔고, 최근 지방선거와 총선은 사실상 독점 체제가 굳어졌다. 많은 기초의원이 무투표 당선되고, 정치인들은 유권자가 아니라 공천권자만 바라보게 됐다"고 지적했다. 이어 "이런 구조가 견제와 균형을 무너뜨리고, 무능과 부패만 키웠다"고 비판했다.
조 대표는 "압도적인 지지를 받은 국민의힘 대구 지도자들이 그동안 무엇을 했는지, 왜 대구를 전국 꼴찌로 만들었는지 시민들에게 묻고 싶다"고 목소리를 높였다.
