바이오파운드리는 인공지능과 로봇기술을 접목해 합성생물학을 비롯한 바이오 연구개발 전 과정을 자동화·고속화하는 첨단 시설로, 미래 바이오경제 시대를 주도할 핵심 인프라로 주목받고 있다.
포항TP는 지난 2024년 4월 농림축산식품부의 ‘그린바이오 소재 첨단분석시스템 구축’ 공모사업에 선정돼, 공공 바이오파운드리를 활용한 그린바이오 소재 개발과 생산 공정의 자동화·고속화·표준화를 추진하고 있다. 해당 사업은 정부의 ‘그린바이오 산업 육성전략’에 따라 농식품 분야 바이오 산업 경쟁력 강화를 목표로 한다.
바이오파운드리는 설계(Design)·제작(Build)·검증(Test)·학습(Learn)으로 이어지는 D-B-T-L 전주기 과정을 통해 연구와 제조의 속도와 규모, 생산 효율을 획기적으로 높일 것으로 기대된다. 특히 합성생물학 기술을 기반으로 한 자동화 연구 환경은 차세대 바이오 산업의 성장 동력이 될 전망이다.
이번 인재 양성 사업은 경북 RISE(지역혁신중심 대학지원체계) 사업의 지원을 받아 추진되며, 바이오파운드리 분야의 전문 인력 확보와 지역 바이오산업 경쟁력 강화에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대되고 있다.
포항TP는 교육자료 제작·배포와 함께 지난해부터 바이오파운드리 시스템 활용을 주제로 연구자, 학생, 기업을 대상으로 설명회를 운영해 왔으며, 향후 기업 활용 지원과 전문 인재 양성을 더욱 확대해 나갈 계획이다.
배영호 포항TP 원장은 “경북도와 포항시와 함께 지역 주도의 신성장 바이오산업 육성을 위해 그린바이오벤처캠퍼스 등 첨단 산업화 인프라 조성에 지속적으로 힘써왔다”며 “이러한 성과를 바탕으로 국가첨단전략산업 바이오특화단지와 그린바이오 산업 육성지구에 선정되는 성과를 거뒀다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “앞으로도 지역 첨단 벤처기업과 우수 대학의 바이오 분야 인적·기술적 역량을 결집해 지역경제 활성화와 일자리 창출에 기여하도록 적극 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

Pohang Technopark and POSTECH Launch Full-Scale Biofoundry Talent Development

In line with the government's "Green Bio Industry Promotion Strategy," the project aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the bioindustry in the agricultural and food sectors.
The biofoundry is expected to dramatically increase the speed, scale, and production efficiency of research and manufacturing through the full D-B-T-L cycle of design, build, test, and learn. In particular, the automated research environment based on synthetic biology technology is expected to become a growth engine for the next-generation bio industry.
This talent development project is being implemented with support from the Gyeongbuk RISE (Regional Innovation-Oriented University Support System) project and is expected to significantly contribute to securing specialized talent in the biofoundry field and strengthening the competitiveness of the local bioindustry.
Pohang Technology Partnership (TP) has been producing and distributing educational materials and holding information sessions for researchers, students, and companies since last year on utilizing the biofoundry system. It plans to further expand support for corporate use and the development of specialized talent.

He added, "We will continue to actively contribute to the revitalization of the local economy and job creation by pooling the human and technological capabilities of local advanced venture companies and leading universities in the bio sector."
