[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 통영시는 도심 주요 도로변을 중심으로 가로수 정비사업을 추진하며 쾌적한 도시환경 조성에 나서고 있다고 23일 밝혔다.
이번 가로수 정비사업은 죽림신시가지, 주요 간선도로변 등 보행자 안전사고 발생 우려가 있는 가로수 뿌리들림을 정비하고 수형이 불량하거나 생육 상태가 저하된 수목에 대해 가지치기 등을 시행해 보행 안전 확보와 도시미관 개선을 동시에 도모하기 위해 추진 중에 있다.
작년에는 무전, 북신 신시가지 내 어린이와 시민들의 통행량이 많은 지역을 우선적으로 대부분의 가로수분 정비를 완료했으며 올해는 죽림신시가지지역 통행량이 많은 주요 도로변을 시작으로 가로수 뿌리들림과 인조잔디 보호판 설치를 통한 정비 추진에 박차를 가하고 있다.
또한 시민 불편 해소를 위한 도로 통행 지장 가로수, 가로화단 가지치기를 통해 운전자 시야 확보 및 가로수 생육 여건 개선 등 건강하고 균형 잡힌 수형을 유지할 수 있도록 2월 중 사업 완료를 목표로 추진 중에 있다.
이러한 노력으로 도심의 중요한 선형 녹지축 기능 향상과 더불어 보행자 발걸림 등으로 발생하던 영조물 사고접수 건수가 2025년 하반기부터 대폭 감소 되는 성과를 거뒀다.
시 관계자는 "통영시는 우리나라 대표적인 관광도시인 만큼 지속적인 가로수 관리를 통해 도심이 항상 아름답고 쾌적한 환경이 될 수 있도록 노력하겠다"고 전했다.
