충청북도 음성군에서 작품 활동을 이어가고 있는 권택철 작가가 ‘제29회 통일미술대전’ 서각 부문에서 대상을 수상했다.
통일미술대전은 통일부와 (사)평화문화재단이 공동 주최하는 전국 규모의 미술 공모전으로, 한반도 평화통일과 국민 통합의 가치를 예술로 확산시키기 위해 매년 개최되고 있다. 올해로 29회를 맞은 이번 대전에서는 서각을 비롯해 서예, 문인화 등 다양한 분야에서 수상작이 선정됐다.
대상 수상작인 ‘통일을 위하여’는 무궁화 꽃술 안에 통일에 대한 염원을 담은 단어들을 배치해 한반도를 형상화한 작품이다. 긍정과 희망의 메시지를 중심에 두고 통일 의지를 상징적으로 표현했으며, 서각의 전통 기법을 충실히 살리면서도 현대적인 해석을 더했다는 평가를 받았다.

권 작가는 나무판 위에 글자와 그림을 새기는 서각 작업을 통해 기록의 차원을 넘어, 서각을 일상 속 예술로 확장하는 데 힘써왔다. 단순한 문자 조형을 넘어 삶의 메시지를 담아내는 작업 세계를 꾸준히 구축해 오고 있다.
권 작가는 “한 글자 한 글자를 새기며 마음을 다스리고, 나무결 속에서 세상과 소통하는 법을 배우고 있다”며 “칼끝으로 새긴 단어들이 단순한 글자에 머무르지 않고, 사람들의 삶 속에서 의미로 살아나기를 바란다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
Kwon Taek-cheol Wins Grand Prize in Engraved Calligraphy at the 29th Unification Art Exhibition

Kwon Taek-cheol, an artist based in Eumseong County, Chungcheongbuk-do, has won the Grand Prize in the engraved calligraphy category at the 29th Unification Art Exhibition.
The Unification Art Exhibition is a nationwide art competition jointly hosted by the Ministry of Unification and the Peace Culture Foundation. It is held annually to promote the values of peace, unification of the Korean Peninsula, and national integration through art. Marking its 29th edition this year, the exhibition selected award-winning works across various fields, including engraved calligraphy, traditional calligraphy, and literati painting.
The Grand Prize-winning work, “For Unification,” portrays the Korean Peninsula by arranging words expressing hopes for unification within the stamens of a mugunghwa (the national flower of Korea). Centered on messages of positivity and hope, the piece symbolically conveys the artist’s aspiration for unification. It was praised for faithfully preserving traditional engraving techniques while offering a contemporary interpretation.
Through his engraved calligraphy, in which he carves letters and images into wooden boards, Kwon has sought to move beyond mere documentation, expanding the genre into a form of art embedded in everyday life. His body of work consistently transcends simple typographic form, conveying profound messages about human life and society.
