서구문화재단에 따르면, 검여(劍如) 유희강 선생 서거 50주년을 맞아 마련된 이번 대회는 검여 선생의 예술정신과 서예 철학을 동시대 문화 환경 속에서 새롭게 해석하고 확산하는 ‘검여 유희강 K-Culture 프로젝트’의 일환으로 추진된다.
