[Break News Dongducheon=Reporter Kim Wan-young] On January 28th, Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province officially submitted five key recommendations to the Ministry of National Defense to address the US Military Base Grant Area issue at the "Government Support Plan for the Development of the Northern Gyeonggi Province Returned Grant Area."
Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-baek, Dongducheon Mayor Park Hyung-deok, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon, Uijeongbu Mayor Kim Dong-geun, and Paju Mayor Kim Kyung-il attended the meeting.
Dongducheon Mayor Park Hyung-deok offered supplemental opinions on the government's plan for the development of the Northern Gyeonggi Province Returned Grant Area and made the following five key recommendations to fundamentally resolve the US Military Base Grant Area issue in Dongducheon:
Key recommendations include: ▲ Prioritizing the return of Camp Castle and Camp Mobile and presenting an official national return plan for Camp Casey and Hovey; ▲ Amending the "US Military Land Grant Act" to improve the system, including easing restrictions on the sale and disposal of returned land; ▲ Supporting the development of national industrial complexes and state-led development of returned land, including the Jimbols Training Center; ▲ Establishing a bypass to address traffic issues for residents of Geolsan-dong, often referred to as an "island on land," and ▲ Forming a regular consultative body between the Ministry of National Defense and local governments in northern Gyeonggi Province.
Dongducheon City plans to continue consultations and coordinate opinions with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of National Defense, the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Through this, the city will systematically discuss the return and development of unreturned US military land grants and focus all administrative resources on achieving tangible results, leading to efficient utilization of returned land grants and balanced regional development.
