국민의힘이 스스로 만든 골짜기에서 길을 잃고 있다. 당원들이 선출한 당대표를 끌어내리겠다는 구호만 요란하고, 그 다음 장면은 보이지 않는다. “이대론 선거 몰살”이라며 장동혁 대표 사퇴를 외치는 친(親)한(한동훈 계)계 의원들과 원외 인사들의 목소리는 커졌지만, 정작 묻고 싶은 질문은 하나다. 그래서 대안은 무엇인가.

호랑이가 사라진 골짜기에서 여우가 왕 노릇을 한다더니, 지금 국민의힘은 여우들끼리 이전투구를 벌이고 있는 형국이다. 선거는 다가오는데, 책임질 주체는 보이지 않고 말만 난무한다. 당대표를 퇴진시키면 무엇이 달라지는지, 누가 책임지고 수도권 선거를 이끌 것인지에 대한 로드맵은 없다. 정치에서 가장 위험한 순간은 분노는 있는데 설계도가 없을 때다.
친한계 의원 16명과 전·현직 원외 당협위원장 24명이 장 대표 사퇴를 요구했다. 그러나 국민은 이렇게 묻는다. “공천 보은 하라고 국회의원 시켜준 것이냐.” 지도부 비판은 할 수 있다. 그러나 당원 주권을 부정하는 방식의 퇴진 압박은 명분도, 미래도 없다. 선출된 대표를 흔들려면 최소한 그보다 더 나은 비전과 리더십을 제시해야 한다. 그렇지 않다면 그것은 개혁이 아니라 권력 공백을 노린 정치다.
수도권 위기론은 사실이다. 서울·인천·경기에서 국민의힘 지지율은 참담하다. 그러나 이 위기의 원인을 오직 장동혁 개인에게 덮어씌우는 것은 무책임하다. 수도권 몰락은 하루아침에 온 것이 아니다. 변화 없는 인재 구조, 구태의 공천 문화, 시대 감각을 잃은 메시지가 누적된 결과다. 이 구조를 만든 이들 중 상당수가 지금 ‘사퇴’를 외치고 있다는 점에서 국민은 냉소한다.
더 큰 문제는 이 싸움이 AI·기술·산업 대전환의 시대와 완전히 동떨어져 있다는 것이다. 국민의힘 내부 논쟁을 들여다보면, 여전히 사람 문제·계파 문제·자리 문제에 머물러 있다. AI로 일자리가 재편되고, 로봇과 자동화가 산업 구조를 바꾸며, 기후·안보·공급망 위기가 동시에 몰려오는 시대에 야당이든 여당이든 정당이 제시해야 할 것은 미래 생존 전략이다. 그런데 지금 국민의힘에서 그 이야기는 들리지 않는다.
장동혁 대표 체제도 예외는 아니다. 버티기만 해서는 안 된다. 당대표를 지키는 것이 목표가 아니라, 당을 살리는 것이 목표여야 한다. 장 대표가 가야 할 길은 분명하다. 첫째, 공천을 권력의 보상이 아니라 전략과 경쟁의 장으로 만들어야 한다. 둘째, 수도권에 ‘말 잘하는 정치인’이 아니라 문제 해결형 인재를 전면 배치해야 한다. 셋째, AI·산업·안보·기후를 아우르는 미래형 보수 아젠다를 분명히 제시해야 한다.

국민의힘은 지금 장마철 한강에 떠내려오는 정치 쓰레기를 방치할 여유가 없다. 내부 청소를 하지 않으면, 수도권은 물론 당의 미래도 없다. 더불어 보수 언론 역시 편 가르기에 매몰돼서는 안 된다. 지금 필요한 것은 특정 계파의 승패가 아니라 보수 정치 전체의 재건이다.
정치는 권력 놀음이 아니다. 국민은 여우들의 싸움을 보려고 투표하지 않았다. 이제 국민의힘은 답해야 한다. 누가 내려가느냐가 아니라, 누가 이 시대를 책임질 것이냐에 대해.

The voices of pro-Han (Han Dong-hoon faction) lawmakers and non-parliamentary figures calling for Jang Dong-hyuk's resignation, claiming that "Lee Dae-ron will destroy the election," have grown louder, but the real question remains: what is the alternative?
They say the fox reigns in a valley where the tiger has disappeared, and now the People Power Party is in a situation where the foxes are fighting among themselves. With the election looming, there's no one to take responsibility, only rhetoric. There's no roadmap for what will change if the party leader resigns, or who will take responsibility and lead the Seoul Capital Area elections. The most dangerous moment in politics is when there's anger but no blueprint.
Sixteen pro-Korean lawmakers and 24 former and current non-parliamentary party committee chairs have demanded Jang's resignation. However, the public is asking, "Did you let him become a National Assembly member just so he could repay the favor by getting a nomination?" Criticism of the leadership is permissible. However, pressuring him to resign by denying the party's sovereignty has neither justification nor a future. To shake up the elected leader, at the very least, a better vision and leadership must be presented. Otherwise, it's not reform; it's politics aimed at creating a power vacuum.
The theory of a Seoul metropolitan area crisis is true. The People Power Party's approval ratings in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province are dismal. However, it's irresponsible to blame this crisis solely on Jang Dong-hyuk. The Seoul metropolitan area's decline didn't happen overnight. It's the cumulative result of an unchanging talent structure, an outdated nomination culture, and messages that have lost touch with the times. The public is cynical that many of those who created this structure are now calling for his resignation.
The bigger problem is that this fight is completely out of touch with the era of AI, technology, and industrial transformation. A closer look at the internal debate within the People Power Party reveals that it remains mired in issues of personnel, factionalism, and positions. In an era where AI is reshaping jobs, robots and automation are reshaping industrial structures, and climate, security, and supply chain crises are looming simultaneously, what every party, whether in the opposition or the ruling party, must present is a future survival strategy. However, this narrative is currently absent from the People Power Party.
The leadership of Jang Dong-hyuk is no exception. Merely enduring is not enough. The goal should not be to retain the party leadership, but to revitalize the party. Jang's path is clear. First, the nomination process must become a forum for strategy and competition, not a reward for power. Second, the Seoul metropolitan area must be fully staffed with problem-solving talent, not just "slick politicians." Third, a future-oriented conservative agenda encompassing AI, industry, security, and climate must be clearly presented.
The People Power Party cannot afford to ignore the political garbage floating down the Han River during the monsoon season. Without internal cleanup, the future of the party, not to mention the Seoul metropolitan area, is jeopardized. Conservative media, too, must not become mired in factionalism. What's needed now is not the victory or defeat of a particular faction, but the rebuilding of conservative politics as a whole.
Politics is not a power play. The people didn't vote to see a battle of wolves. Now, the People Power Party must answer. Not about who will step down, but about who will take responsibility for this era.
