이재명 대통령이 5일 미래 과학자들과 만나 "국가 장학제도뿐만 아닌 국가연구자 제도까지 도입해 평생 과학기술 연구에 종사하면서도 자랑스럽고 명예롭게 살 수 있는 길을 열어보려 한다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오전 청와대 영빈관에서 대통령 과학장학생·올림피아드 대표단이 참석한 가운데 '도전하는 과학자, 도약하는 대한민국' 주제로 열린 '제12회 미래 과학자와의 대화' 간담회 모두 발언에서 "과학기술을 존중·투자하고 과학기술자들이 인정받는 사회여야 미래가 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "과학기술은 그 나라 국가 역량 그 자체라 할 수 있다"며 "역사적으로 볼 때도 과학기술을 존중하는 체제는 흥했으며 천시하는 시대는 망했다"고 했다.
이어 "앞으로도 이 점은 변함 없을 것"이라며 "대한민국도 자원·특별한 역량 없는 나라였으나 오로지 교육·과학기술에 투자한 결과 세계서 인정받는 나라가 됐다"고 했다.
또 "국가 간 경쟁이 치열하면 치열할수록 결국 국민 역량이 얼마나 뛰어나고 발전하느냐에 따라 국가 운명이 결정될 것"이라며 "여러분들 손에 대한민국 운명이 달려있다는 책임감으로 여러분 개인 인생에서도 매우 중요한 일이란 생각을 갖고 앞으로도 최선을 다해주길 바란다"고 덧붙였다.
