AI·SNS 시대, 국가지도자의 품격은 ‘침묵의 절제’다.
요즘 이재명 대통령의 행보를 보면 하루가 멀다 하고 특집성 메시지가 쏟아진다. 현안마다 즉각 반응하고, 공약마다 직접 설명하며, 사소한 정책 방향까지 대통령의 입으로 전달된다. 처음에는 ‘소통하는 대통령’으로 읽힐 수 있다. 그러나 시간이 지나며 국민의 피로감은 커지고, 말의 무게는 오히려 가벼워지고 있다.

국가지도자의 발언은 일반 정치인의 말과 다르다. 대통령의 한마디는 곧 정책이 되고, 신호가 되며, 시장과 외교, 사회 전반에 파장을 일으킨다. 그런데 그 말이 너무 잦아지면 어떨까. 기대는 혼란으로 바뀌고, 선언은 공허한 약속처럼 들리기 시작한다. “저렇게 말해도 되나”라는 걱정이 나오는 이유다.
역설적이게도 국가는 대통령이 잘 보이지 않을 때 더 안정적으로 굴러간다. 국민이 매일 대통령의 얼굴과 발언을 접하지 않아도, 시스템과 관료조직이 묵묵히 작동할 때 신뢰는 쌓인다. 반대로 대통령의 말이 많아질수록, 그것은 곧 국가 운영에 문제가 많다는 신호로 읽힌다.
특히 AI 시대, SNS 시대는 말의 위험성이 극대화된 환경이다. 발언 하나가 실시간으로 편집되고 왜곡되며, 맥락을 잃은 채 유통된다. 오늘의 약속은 내일의 ‘거짓말 프레임’으로 돌아온다. 의도가 아무리 선해도, 말이 많으면 정치적 공격의 재료만 늘어날 뿐이다.
청와대 참모들이 지금 가장 먼저 해야 할 일은 대통령의 ‘말하기’를 줄이자는 건의다. 국정의 중심은 메시지가 아니라 결과여야 한다. 대통령은 설명자가 아니라 책임자다. 설명은 장관과 참모가 하고, 대통령은 필요한 순간에만 방향을 제시해야 한다.

위대한 지도자는 말을 아끼는 법을 안다. 침묵은 무능이 아니라 절제이며, 품격이다. 이재명 대통령이 진정으로 AI 시대의 국가지도자가 되고자 한다면, 이제는 더 많이 말하는 대통령이 아니라 더 적게 말해도 신뢰받는 대통령으로 변해야 한다. 국가는 말이 아니라, 무게로 운영된다.

But what happens when such words become too frequent? Expectations turn to confusion, and declarations begin to sound like empty promises. This is why concerns arise, such as, "Can he really say something like that?"
Ironically, a nation runs more stably when the president is not easily visible. Even if the public doesn't see the president's face or words every day, trust builds when systems and bureaucracies operate silently. Conversely, the more the president speaks, the more it is interpreted as a sign of serious problems in national governance.
Especially in the age of AI and social media, the dangers of words are heightened. A single utterance is edited and distorted in real time, disseminated without context. Today's promises become tomorrow's "lies." No matter how well-intentioned, excessive talk only creates more fodder for political attacks.
The first priority for Blue House staff is to recommend that the president reduce his "speaking." The focus of state affairs should be results, not messages. The president is not an explainer, but a responsible individual. Ministers and staff should provide explanations, and the president should only provide direction when necessary.
A great leader knows how to speak sparingly. Silence is not incompetence, but restraint and dignity. If President Lee Jae-myung truly aspires to be a leader in the AI era, he must transform from a president who speaks more to one who earns trust even with less. A nation is governed by weight, not words.
