박범계 국회의원이 11일 대전 유성구 문지동에서 기자회견을 열고, 충청남도와 대전광역시의 통합으로 출범할 ‘충남·대전통합특별시’의 초대 시장 후보로 출마하겠다고 공식 선언했다.
박 의원은 이번 출마를 단순한 직함 확보가 아닌, 대한민국의 성장 방식을 바꾸는 선택에 대한 ‘책임의 선언’으로 규정했다.
박 의원은 출마 선언문에서 수도권 일극 체제의 한계를 지적하며, 충남·대전 통합이 국가 성장의 축을 재배치하는 유일한 대안임을 강조했다.
그는 “잠재성장률이 1%대로 떨어진 상황에서 기존의 방식으로는 돌파구가 보이지 않는다”며, “통합은 단순한 구역 결합이 아니라, 지방 주도의 혁신을 기반으로 한 새로운 경제 구조를 만드는 수단”이라고 밝혔다.
특히 노무현 전 대통령의 균형발전 철학을 계승하고, 이를 이재명 정부의 ‘5극 3특’(5개 메가시티, 3개 특별자치도) 국가 전략으로 구체화하겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.
박 의원은 “충남·대전통합특별시는 이 전략을 현장에서 증명해야 할 가장 중요한 모델”이라며 본인이 그 흐름을 가장 깊이 이해하고 있는 적임자임을 내세웠다.

이장우 대전시장이 제기한 특별법의 부실함과 졸속 추진 비판에 대해서도 입장을 밝혔다.
박 의원은 “민주당이 발의한 특별법은 특정인을 위한 것이 아니라 통합이 성공하기 위해 국가가 책임지라는 정치적 요구”라고 반박했다.
그는 재정 특례와 권한 이양 등 통합의 필수 조건을 법적으로 보장받기 위해 정부와 국회를 설득할 강력한 정치력이 필요함을 역대 법무부 장관 및 국회 활동 경력을 들어 피력했다.
