한설 예비역 장군(육군 소장)은 인터넷 저널인 2월15일치 페이스북에 “기능과 역할을 상실한 한국 지식인 사회를 아쉬워하면서”라는 제목의 칼럼을 게재했다. 한설 예비역 장군은 이 글에서 국가보안법 폐지를 옹호했다.

이어 “한국이 자신의 가치를 인정받으려면 독자적인 입장을 분명하게 해야 한다. 필자가 한국이 독자적인 입장을 수립해야 한다면 많은 사람들이 조선과 친화적으로 가야 한다고 생각하는 것 같다. 한국이 독자적인 태도와 입장을 분명하게 하는 것과 조선과의 관계를 어떻게 할 것인가는 또 다른 문제”라면서 “한국이 독자적인 입장을 지녀야 한다는 것은 모든 것의 중심에 국가 이익을 놓아야 한다는 것이다. 물론 그 국가 이익의 중심은 대중의 삶이 가장 핵심이다. 기업도 대중의 삶을 증진하기 위한 기능을 하지 못하면 무용지물”이라고 피력했다.
또한 “현재의 상황은 조선(북한)을 반국가단체라는 틀 안에 두어서는 한국의 국가이익을 제대로 확보할 수 없는 상황이다. 이런 합리적인 접근에 방해되는 것은 조선에 대한 무조건적 적대감을 가지고 있는 사람과 함께, 조선에 대한 감정적 옹호와 호응의 태도를 가지고 있는 사람들 모두가 해당된다.”면서 “나는 국가보안법 폐지를 옹호한다. 그러나 내가 국가보안법 폐지를 옹호하는 것은 조선을 국가로 인정한다는 것이지 조선을 옹호하고 한국보다 조선이 더 정통성이 있다는 식의 주장 때문이 아니다. 지금의 상황에서 누가 더 정통성이 있는가는 사실 대중의 삶에 아무런 의미도 없다. 한국이 지상천국이 아니듯이 조선도 지상낙원이 아니다. 어디나 다 사람 사는 세상이고, 사람이 사는 세상은 어디 할 것 없이 모두 모순으로 가득 차 있다. 너의 모순과 나의 모순이 어디가 더 크고 무엇이 더 옳고 틀리고를 따지는 것은 지금의 지정학적 격변의 상황에서는 한가한 이야기인 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
