유태 민족은 특별히 하나님으로부터 선택된 민족이라는 사상인 선민의식(Chosen people consciousness)이 강하다. 이러한 선민 사상이 가장 잘 표현되어 있는 것은 구약성경에도 나온다.
<신명기> 7:7을 보면 "그대들의 신 주님은 지상에 있는 모든 백성 가운데서 그대들을 선택하여 주님의 보배로운 백성으로 삼았다"고 했다. 이는 유대인의 선조인 아브라함-이삭-야곱으로 이어오는 가계에 대한 약속을 지키기 위한 것이며 그들에 대한 애정의 표시이기도 하다. 따라서 하나님을 사랑하며, 그 명하는 바에 따르는 자에게는 은총이 내리고 미워하는 자에게는 벌을 내린다고 하였다.
이와 같은 선민사상을 교리로 가진 유태교에서는 이방인과 결혼해서는 안 되며, 유태인에게 주어진 땅에 살고 있는 이방인들과 그들의 아이 및 가축까지도 모두 죽여야 한다고 명시되어 있다. 또한 이방인에 대한 차별 대우는 당연한 것처럼 명시된 규정들이 존재한다. 이로 인하여 오늘날에도 정통파 유태교인들은 유태인들끼리만 결혼하면서 순혈주의적 태도를 가지지만 유태인 디아스포라 현상이 지속되면서 유태교를 믿기만 하면 이방인이라도 유태인이 되거나 유태인과 결혼해 가정을 꾸릴 수 있게 됐다. 아슈케나지 유태인은 그런 맥락에서 만들어지고 구성된 유태계다. 그래서 순혈 히브리인을 유태인이라 부르고, 그렇지 않은 이방인과 혼혈된 유태인이거나 유태교를 믿는 이방인을 유태계라고 구분하고 있다.
<레위기>25:44~46에 보면 "네 종은 남녀를 막론하고 네 사방 이방인 중에서 취할지니 남녀 종은 이런 자 중에서 사올 것이며 또 너희 중에 거류하는 동거인들의 자녀 중에서도 너희가 사올 수 있고 또 그들이 너희와 함께 있어서 너희 땅에서 가정을 이룬 자들 중에서도 그리 할 수 있은즉 그들이 너희의 소유가 될지니라. 너희는 그들을 너희 후손에게 기업으로 주어 소유가 되게 할 것이라 이방인 중에서는 너희가 영원한 종을 삼으려니와 너희 동족 이스라엘 자손은 너희가 피차 엄하게 부리지 말지니라."
이처럼 대놓고 이방인은 노예로 부려도 되고 동족인 유태인은 노예로 부리지 말라고 한다.
<신명기> 15:1~3, 23:20을 보면 "매 7년 끝에는 빚을 면제하여 주십시오.면제 규례는 이러합니다. 누구든지 이웃에게 돈을 꾸어 준 사람은 그 빚을 면제하여 주십시오. 주님께서 면제를 선포하였기 때문에 이웃이나 동족에게 빚을 갚으라고 다그쳐서는 안 됩니다. 이방 사람에게 준 빚은 갚으라고 할 수 있으나, 당신들의 동족에게 준 빚은 면제해 주어야 합니다.... (중략).... 타국인에게 네가 꾸어주면 이자를 받아도 되거니와 네 형제에게 꾸어주거든 이자를 받지 말라 그리하면 네 하나님 여호와께서 네가 들어가서 차지할 땅에서 네 손으로 하는 범사에 복을 내리시리라."
유태인들이 유럽에서 핍박을 받게 된 것은 이와 같은 빚에 관한 부분에서 매우 엄격하게 다루었기 때문이다. 위와 같은 성경의 구절은 유태인들이 고리대금업을 하여 대출을 해주고, 이자까지 비싸게 받는 악덕 사채업자가 된 이유가 되기도 했다. 또한 이스라엘의 세파르디 최고 랍비인 이츠하크 요셉(Yitzhak Yosef)은 유대교 율법에 따라 "이방인은 이스라엘에 거주하면 안 된다."고 했다. 이방인에 대한 유태인들의 차별은 <성경>이나 <토라>를 보면 아주 명확히 나타난다.
알 자지라에서 취재한 해드라인을 보면 랍비들의 잔혹성은 매우 명확하게 드러난다.

또한 로센이라는 이스라엘 랍비는 "팔레스타인 사람은 남자, 여자, 아이를 불문하고 모두 죽여야 한다. 그들의 가축도 예외가 되어서는 안 된다"는 극단적인 발언을 해 팔레스타인 사람들 뿐만 아니라 세계인의 분노를 사기도 했다. 이같은 대표적인 유태인 근본주의 운동은 하레디즘과 하바드 류바비치(Хабад-Любавич) 운동으로 나타난다. 하바드 류바비치(Хабад-Любавич) 운동은 18세기 러시아에서 시작된 유태교 하시디즘(Hasidism)의 가장 큰 초정통파 종파에서 발생한 근본주의 운동이다. 본래 러시아의 루바비치에서 슈네르손(Шнеерсон) 가문에 의해 시작되었다. 하레디(Haredi)는 극보수주의 유태교 종파를 숭상하는 유태인 집단을 통칭하는 단체로 일부 종파를 제외하면 대개 폐쇄적이고 근본주의적인 성향을 보이고 있다. 하레디는 처음부터 하레딤(Haredim)이란 이름으로 생겨난 것이 아니며 일부 정통파 유태교들이 현대에 와서 그와 같이 분류가 되는 것으로 알려졌다. 하레디 거의 대부분은 토종 유태인들이 아니라 아슈케나지 유태인에 속해 있다. 하레디들은 이스라엘이 건국되기 전부터 예루살렘에서 공동체를 이루어 살던 유태인들도 있었고 이후에 해외에서 들어온 사람들도 있는데, 매우 배타적이고 과격한 행동주의자들이다.

이러한 가르침들은 유태인들에게 있어 그들의 선민사상을 믿고 전 세계 어느 나라든, 함부로 행동할 수 있게 만든다. 그와 같은 행동들은 중국인이나 인도인 못지 않은 비매너 행동을 양산하며 이들의 모든 비호감 행동들을 정당화 할 수 있는 수단으로 만든다. 이와 같은 비매너 행위의 대표적인 사건이 현재진행형인 파타고니아 방화 사건이다. 지난 1월 30일 아르헨티나 정부는 파타고니아 지역 산불 진화를 위해 비상사태를 선포했다. 이스라엘 관광객들에 의해 아르헨티나 파타고니아에서 발생한 화재는 진화가 잘 되지 않고 있다. 그런데 이것이 이번이 처음이 아니라는 일이다. 과거 이스라엘인들이 방화로 적발된 사례들 있는데 칠레의 파타고니아에서도 불을 지르다가 체포된 전력들이 있다고 한다. 이스라엘은 이란과의 전쟁을 대비해 아르헨티나 대통령 하비에르 밀레이와 협업해 파타고니아 땅에 이스라엘 사람들의 정착지를 준비한다는 소문이 퍼지고 있다. 그에 맞춰 밀레이는 평소에 하바드 류바비치(Хабад-Любавич) 운동을 일으킨 슈네르손을 존경한다고 말해왔었다. 그는 뉴욕에 방문했을 때, 류바비치 운동 사무소를 직접 방문하기도 했다고 한다. 밀레이는 이처럼 유태인과 매우 밀접하고 가까운 사이이다. 제프리 엡스타인 파일을 더 까보면 하비에르 밀레이도 분명히 명단에 등장할 가능성이 높다.

Judaism, which adheres to this concept of chosen people, forbids intermarriage with foreigners and explicitly states that all foreigners living in the land given to the Jews, including their children and livestock, must be killed. Furthermore, there are explicit regulations that explicitly treat Gentiles as a given. As a result, even today, Orthodox Jews maintain a pure-blooded attitude, marrying only Jews. However, the ongoing Jewish diaspora has made it possible for Gentiles, as long as they believe in Judaism, to become Jews or marry Jews and form families.
