On the 21st, regarding the US Supreme Court's ruling that reciprocal tariffs are illegal, the Blue House stated, "Based on the special alliance between Korea and the US, we will continue friendly consultations to ensure that the balance of interests and export conditions to the US, achieved through the Korea-US tariff agreement, are not undermined."
Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung said in a written briefing that afternoon, "This afternoon, we held a meeting of ministries related to current trade issues with the U.S., chaired by National Security Office Director Wi Seong-rak and Policy Office Director Kim Yong-beom, and reviewed the content of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, its repercussions, and future response plans."
She added, "It is true that the US judiciary's ruling has increased uncertainty in the international trade environment. The government will work closely with relevant ministries to safeguard the achievements of the Korea-US tariff agreement."
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yoon-chul, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan, Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo, and other relevant ministers and vice ministers, as well as Blue House Senior Secretary for Economic Growth Ha Joon-kyung and Third Deputy Director of the National Security Office Oh Hyun-joo.
The participants reviewed the key details and impact of the US Supreme Court's ruling that reciprocal tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful. While the current 15% reciprocal tariff imposed by the US is invalid, they agreed to closely monitor the US's actions and trends in key countries, given the US administration's subsequent announcement of a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act.
Furthermore, regarding the issue of reciprocal tariff refunds, which was not explicitly mentioned in the ruling, they planned to closely collaborate with economic organizations and associations to ensure that domestic companies receive accurate and timely information. They also reviewed the progress of the legislation for the Special Act on Investment in the US and agreed to ensure the smooth progress of legislative procedures, including public hearings.
