중구청에 따르면 현재 관내에는 주차장 개방 공유사업을 통해 12곳 287면, 공한지 무료주차장 16곳 92면 등 총 28곳 379면의 주차공간을 마련해 운영 중이다. 구는 이를 토대로 민간 참여를 늘리고, 대형 시설과 유휴 부지를 활용해 추가 주차면 확보에 속도를 낼 계획이다.
주차장 개방 공유사업은 학교, 대형 건물, 종교시설 등의 부설주차장을 일정 기간 이상 주민들에게 개방하는 방식이다. 최소 2년 이상, 5면 이상 주차공간을 내놓아야 하며, 개방 면수에 따라 표지판·조명·안전시설 등 시설개선비를 최대 3,000만 원까지 지원한다. 구는 참여 기관과 협의해 개방 시간과 관리 책임 등을 정한 뒤, 주민들에게 무료로 공간을 제공하고 있다.
공한지 무료주차장 조성사업은 1년 이상 활용 가능한 사유지 및 국·공유지를 대상으로 한다. 토지 소유자 동의를 받아 기초 정비와 포장, 안내 표지 설치 등을 거쳐 무료주차장으로 조성하며, 구청이 운영과 유지 관리까지 맡는다.
특히 올해는 대형 시설인 동아백화점 별관 옥외주차장(282면)이 사업에 참여했다. 해당 주차장은 매일 밤 9시부터 익일 오전 7시 30분까지 주민들에게 무료로 개방돼 상업지역의 야간 주차 수요를 해소하는 데 큰 역할을 하고 있다.
