하지만 행정통합을 추진하는 과정에 대해서는 아쉬움을 나타냈다. 대구시당은 “그동안의 논의 과정에서 준비 부족과 책임 회피가 반복돼 시민 신뢰를 얻지 못했다”며 “정리된 대안을 충분히 제시하지 못했고, 지역의 다양한 목소리도 제대로 반영하지 못한 점을 엄중히 되돌아본다”고 밝혔다.
또한 “정치적 유불리를 이유로 통합 논의를 지연시키는 태도에 대해서는 유감을 표한다”고 강조했다.
행정통합의 방향과 관련해서도 “속도보다 내용이 우선”이라고 선을 그었다. 시당은 “제기된 우려들은 통합 자체를 반대하는 것이 아니라, 더욱 완성도 높은 통합을 위한 보완 과제로 삼아야 한다”며 “충분한 공론화와 제도 정비를 통해 시민이 체감할 수 있는 공정하고 실질적인 통합 모델을 만들겠다”고 밝혔다.
이번 논란을 계기로 광역의회 운영과 선거제도의 문제점도 드러났다는 점을 짚었다. 대구시당은 “민의를 균형 있게 반영하고, 중대한 지역 현안에 책임 있게 대응하기 위해서는 선거제도 개혁이 반드시 필요하다”며 “비례성과 대표성을 강화하는 선거제도 개혁을 행정통합 논의와 함께 추진할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
마지막으로 대구시당은 “절차의 투명성과 책임성을 높인 행정통합 방안을 마련해 실효성 있는 통합을 추진하겠다”며 “정치적 무능과 책임 회피로 지역의 미래가 흔들리는 일이 더는 반복돼서는 안 된다”고 강조했다.
