더불어민주당 충남대전통합 및 충청발전특별위원회(이하 특위)는 25일 기자회견을 열고, 지방소멸 위기 극복이라는 시대적 사명 앞에 무책임한 태도를 보이는 국민의힘에 깊은 유감을 표했다.
이들은 회의장 앞 연좌농성을 시작하며 국민의힘 지도부와 소속 광역단체장, 의회 간의 불협화음을 정면으로 겨냥했다.
특위는 현재 국민의힘 내부 상황을 '한 지붕 아래 두 목소리'라고 꼬집었다. 이철우 경북도지사와 경북도의회가 행정통합을 역사적 책무라며 국회 통과를 읍소하는 반면, 대구시의회와 대전·충남의 일부 여권 인사들은 ‘졸속’이라는 이유로 발목을 잡고 있다는 주장이다.
특히 당 지도부인 김재원 최고위원이 행정통합을 “가능하지도 않은 사탕발림”이라 폄훼한 점을 언급하며, 국민의힘이 생각하는 행정통합의 실체가 무엇인지 따져 물었다.

이러한 행태는 행정통합을 지방의 생존 전략이 아닌 선거용 정쟁 수단으로 이용하는 것이라고 지적했다.
민주당 특위는 국민의힘의 침묵과 방관이 길어질수록 지방소멸의 시계만 빨라질 뿐이라며 두 가지 사항을 강력히 요구했다.
첫째는 대구·경북 및 대전·충남 통합법에 대한 국민의힘의 공식적인 당론을 즉각 확정해 발표하라는 것이며, 둘째는 지역 이기주의를 부추기는 발언을 중단하고 국가 균형발전을 위한 대승적 결단에 동참하라는 것이다.
