이재명 대통령이 27일 전북 새만금 일대 개발 관련해 "삼십몇 년째 하고 있는데 앞으로 얼마나 더 걸릴지 진짜 알 수 없어 시대 상황에 맞게 현실적으로 조정할 필요가 있다”고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 전북 전주시 전북대 국제컨벤션센터에서 열린 '전북의 마음을 듣다' 타운홀 미팅에서 "제일 싫어하는 게 희망고문으로 정치인들이 정치적 입지 때문에 실현 불가능하거나 비효율적 일들을 밀어붙이는 경우가 많다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "전북 제일 관심사기도 하고 어찌 보면 골칫거리기도 한 게 새만금 아니냐"며 "대선 때마다 어떻게 하겠다 약속했는데 지지부진하게 해서 화나게 했던 아이템"이라고 했다.
이어 "원래 계획대로 하면 돈을 몇조 이렇게 들어가는데 투자하는 게 만만치 않으며 그리 하는 게 바람직한지도 확신도 안 선다"며 "남아있는 나머지를 계속 옛날 방식으로 메워야 하느냐 생각부터 복잡하고 어려운데 기존 개발된 부분이 잘 활용되는 것 같지도 않다"고 했다.
