이재명 대통령이 3일(현지시간) 한·필리핀 정상회담에서 "양국 사이 놓여있는 지리적 거리도 가깝긴 하나 양국 국민 간 마음 거리는 그보다 훨씬 더 가깝다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오후 필리핀 마닐라 말라카냥궁에서 열린 페르디난드 마르코스 주니어 대통령과의 정상회담 모두 발언에서 이같이 말한 후"양국은 지정학적 불확실성·글로벌 기술 경쟁이란 격변 시대를 굳게 헤쳐나갈 소중한 파트너가 될 것"이라고 했다.
그러면서 "작년 한 해 양국 간 인적교류는 200만명에 이르고 있고, 지난해 필리핀을 방문한 외국인 중 한국인이 1위를 차지했다 들었다"며 "대한민국의 필리핀 사랑은 잘 알려져 있으며 이처럼 깊은 역사적 유대감·단단한 우호관계가 있기 때문에 양국 협력 미래는 매우 밝다"고 했다.
이어 "1949년 수교 이후 양국은 교역·투자·방위 산업·인프라·개발 협력 등 다양한 분야에서 협력 관계를 발전시켜 왔다"며 "이젠 77년간 쌓아온 파트너십을 바탕으로 협력 지평을 더욱 넓히는 문턱에 서 있으며 인공지능·디지털·친환경·에너지·조선·문화 산업 등 양국이 함께할 미래 유망 분야가 활짝 펼쳐지고 있다"고 했다.

마르코스 주니어 대통령은 "양국 관계가 희생에서 비롯된 걸 잘 알지만 지금은 자유·평화·번영 가치로 나아간다는 것도 알고 있다"며 "이젠 더욱 넓은 전략적 동반자 관계로 나아가고 있다"고 화답했다.
또 "한국전쟁부터 전략적 동반자 관계에 이르기까지 양국 관계는 오랜 역사에 기반해왔다"며 "오늘 회담을 통해 상호 존중·이해·협력 기반 공동 가치를 더욱 증진해나가길 기대한다"고 했다.
양국은 이날 디지털 협력 관련 MOU(양해각서)·기술·디지털·혁신 개발협력 관련 MOU·특정 방산물자 조달을 위한 시행약정(개정)·보훈 관련 상호협력에 관한 MOU·농업협력 관련 MOU(개정) 등 5개 분야 MOU를 체결했다.
