브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= LG가 4일 서울 마곡 K스퀘어에서 LG AI대학원 개원식을 열었다. LG AI대학원은 국내 최초로 교육부 공식 인가를 받아 석·박사 학위 취득이 가능한 사내 대학원으로 새롭게 출범한다.
구광모 LG 회장은 이날 입학생들에게 LG의 AI 모델인 엑사원이 탑재된 최고 사양 신형 LG 그램 노트북을 축하 편지와 함께 선물하며, LG AI대학원을 통해 기술의 본질을 ‘사람’에 두고 인간의 가능성을 개척하는 AI 전문가들을 양성하겠다고 강조했다.
구 회장은 “대한민국 최초의 정부인가 LG AI대학원 1기 석박사 과정이라는 영광스럽고도 뜻깊은 길에 첫발을 내디딘 여러분께 진심으로 축하와 격려의 인사를 전한다”며 편지를 시작했다.
이어 “기술은 그 자체가 목적이 아닌 ‘사람들의 미소’를 설계하는 따뜻한 도구여야 하며, 이는 결국 ‘사람’을 향해야 한다”며 “앞으로 하루가 다르게 쏟아지는 전 세계의 기술과 논문들, 풀리지 않는 알고리즘 속에서 수 많은 밤을 지새워야 하는 치열한 시간이 기다리고 있을지 모른다”고 전했다.
또한, “밤낮으로 흘릴 땀방울 하나하나가 우리가 마주한 난제를 해결하고 훗날 누군가에게는 다시 일어설 희망이 되고, 누군가에게는 사랑하는 가족과 더 많은 시간을 보낼 수 있는 여유가 될 것”이라며 “실패는 해답을 찾아가고 있다는 증거이자, 혁신으로 향하는 가장 정직한 과정이다. 실패에 굴하지 않고 상상력을 마음껏 펼칠 수 있도록, 여기서 만들어질 기술이 세상과 만날 수 있도록 가장 든든한 조력자가 되겠다”고 강조했다.
앞서 구 회장은 2020년 그룹 차원의 AI 싱크 탱크인 LG AI연구원을 설립하며 “LG AI연구원이 최고의 인재와 파트너들이 모여 세상의 난제에 마음껏 도전하면서 글로벌 AI 생태계의 중심으로 발전하도록 응원하고 힘을 보태겠다”고 밝힌 바 있다.
LG는 구 회장의 인재 경영 철학을 반영해, 청소년 대상으로 운영하는 ‘LG 디스커버리랩’부터 청년 대상으로 AI 실전 경험을 제공하는 ‘LG 에이머스’, 임직원을 AI 전문가로 양성하는 ‘LG AI 아카데미’, 이번 석·박사 인재 양성을 위한 LG AI대학원까지 ‘맞춤형 AI 교육 체계’를 구축했다.
LG AI대학원은 임직원 대상으로 코딩 테스트, AI 모델링 평가, 심층면접 등의 선발 전형을 거쳐 석사 과정 11명, 박사 과정 6명의 신입생을 맞이한다. LG전자 소속 8명을 비롯해 LG에너지솔루션 3명, LG이노텍 2명, LG디스플레이 2명, LG화학 2명이 이번에 입학했다.
LG AI대학원은 다양한 산업 분야의 학생들이 실무 현장에서 쌓은 도메인 지식과 AI를 융합해 산업 난제를 해결하는 창의적인 방법론을 만드는 등 산업계와 학계 모두에 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
LG AI대학원은 석사 과정 1년, 박사 과정 3년 이상으로 구성하고, 학비 전액을 지원한다. 박사 과정은 SCI(E)급 논문 게재를 졸업 필수 요건으로 정하며, 졸업생은 인공지능학 학위를 받게 된다.
교수진은 LG AI연구원의 다양한 분야의 연구실에서 산업 특화 연구를 전문적으로 수행해 온 겸임교원 24명과 AI 전문지식을 보유한 전임교원 1명으로 구성된다.
교육과정은 LG AI연구원의 연구 인프라와 산업 현장 데이터를 활용해, 학문적 성과를 넘어 산업 현장에 체감할 수 있는 변화를 불러오고 실질적인 가치를 만들 수 있는 실전형 코스로 설계됐다.
LG AI대학원은 초거대 AI 파운데이션 모델 개발부터 산업 응용까지 전주기를 경험할 수 있는 교육과정과, 언어(Language), 비전(Vision), 데이터 인텔리전스(Data Intelligence), 소재·바이오 인텔리전스(Materials·Bio Intelligence) 등 AI를 적용할 수 있는 다양한 산업 도메인별 실전 연구 경험을 함께 제공한다.
특히, 서울대학교와 KAIST, DGIST, UNIST 등 여러 과학기술원과 협력해 특강·세미나를 진행하는 등 지역인재와의 교류를 바탕으로 산학의 경계를 허물고 실질적인 기술 혁신을 이끌 인재를 육성한다는 방침이다.
마곡 K스퀘어 8층에 있는 LG AI대학원 캠퍼스는 실습 중심 AI 교육과 연구가 모두 가능한 융합 학습 공간으로 설계돼, 학생들은 캠퍼스에서 강의·연구·세미나 등 다양한 교육 활동을 수행하게 된다.
이날 개원식에는 이홍락 초대 LG AI대학원장(LG AI연구원 공동 연구원장)과 이해숙 교육부 고등평생정책실장, 박동일 산업부 산업정책실장 등이 참석했다.
이홍락 LG AI대학원장은 “기업이 직접 학위 과정을 운영하는 LG AI대학원의 출범은 대한민국 AI 인재 육성의 새로운 패러다임을 여는 의미 있는 첫걸음”이라며 “학생들이 학문적 연구를 통한 기여를 넘어, 산업 현장의 실제 난제들을 직접 해결하며 미래의 혁신을 이끄는 AI 리더가 될 수 있도록 최고 수준의 교육을 제공하는 데 최선을 다할 것이다”고 말했다.
이해숙 교육부 고등평생정책실장은 “LG AI대학원은 산업 현장의 실제 문제 해결 역량과 대학원의 체계적인 교육·연구 기능이 유기적으로 결합될 수 있음을 보여주는 새로운 도전”이라며 “미래 고등교육 모델의 중요한 이정표이자 국가 인공지능 생태계 전반의 질적 도약을 이끄는 핵심 거점으로 성장할 것이다”고 전했다.
박동일 산업부 산업정책실장도 “LG AI대학원은 주력 산업의 인공지능 전환을 가속화하고, 산업 현장의 난제를 해결하는 고급 AI 인재를 배출하는 핵심 거점으로 성장할 것”이라며, “이곳에서 길러질 인재들이 대한민국 산업의 미래를 이끄는 주역으로 성장하기를 바란다”고 언급했다.
