[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 전호환 전 부산대·동명대 총장이 4일 오후 부산 벡스코 컨벤션홀에서 자전적 에세이 'AI 시대 교육 대전환' 출판기념 북콘서트를 열고, “AI 시대에는 경쟁 중심 교육을 넘어 포용과 실천 중심의 교육으로 대전환이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
전 전 총장은 “AI가 지식 전달 방식을 송두리째 바꾸고 있음에도, 한국 교육은 여전히 주입식 암기와 서열 중심 경쟁에 묶여 있다”며 “아이들이 꼴찌라도 다닐 이유가 있는 학교, 상처를 어루만지는 포용 교육으로 바꿔야 한다”고 말했다. 그는 또 체험과 실천을 중시하는 ‘두잉(Doing)’ 교육 철학을 통해 “행동하며 배우는 인재가 AI 시대의 주역이 된다”고 덧붙였다.
이번 북콘서트에는 지역 정·재계, 교육계 인사와 시민 등 1,500여 명이 참석해 성황을 이뤘다. 강병중 넥센타이어 회장, 박종필 부산교육대학교총동창회 회장, 정선영 초등학부모 대표, 김민성 경성대학교 총학생회장이 직접 축사를 전했다.
영상으로는 박형준 부산시장, 김희정(연제구)·김대식(사상구) 국회의원, 백광준 인하대 교수가 축하 메시지를 전했다. 행사에는 양재생 부산상공회의소 회장, 박용수 골든블루 회장, 정근 온그룹 회장, 김상진 태권도아시아연맹 회장, 장혁표·윤수인 전 부산대 총장, 설동근 전 부산시교육감, 권순기 경남도교육감 예비후보, 노기태 전 강서구청장, 박종호 센텀의료재단 이사장 등 다수의 인사가 참석했다.

한편, 오는 6월 3일 제9회 전국동시지방선거를 앞두고 보수 진영의 교육감 후보군들이 잇따라 출판기념회를 여는 가운데, 전 전 총장도 이번 행사를 통해 사실상 공식 행보를 시작했다. 그는 “어떠한 난관이 있더라도 보수 단일화는 반드시 완수되어야 한다”며 교육감 선거 참여 의지를 내비쳤다.
전 전 총장은 영국 글래스고대학 조선해양공학 박사 출신으로, 부산대 제20대 총장과 동명대 제10대 총장을 역임했다. 대통령직속 국가교육회의 고등·직업교육개혁전문위원장과 지방시대위원회 지방대학활성화특별위원회 위원장을 맡았으며, 현재 (사)동남권발전협의회 상임위원장으로 활동 중이다.

Former Pusan National University and Tongmyong University president Jeon Ho-hwan held a book concert on Wednesday at BEXCO Convention Hall in Busan to celebrate the release of his autobiographical essay “The Great Transformation of Education in the AI Era.”
Jeon emphasized that the age of artificial intelligence demands a shift from a competition-based education system to one grounded in inclusion and practical experience. “Even as AI dramatically transforms how knowledge is delivered, our education system remains trapped in rote memorization and ranking,” he said. “We must build schools where even those at the bottom have reasons to attend — schools that heal and include.”
Highlighting his educational philosophy of “Doing Education,” Jeon underscored the importance of hands-on learning and real-life problem-solving, saying that “students who learn by doing will be the true leaders of the AI era.”
More than 3,000 people from the political, business, and education sectors attended the event. Congratulatory remarks were delivered in person by Kang Byung-jung, chairman of Nexen Tire; Park Jong-pil, president of the Busan National University of Education Alumni Association; elementary school parent representative Jung Sun-young; and Kim Min-sung, student president of Kyungsung University.
Video messages were sent by Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon; National Assembly members Kim Hee-jung (Yeonje District) and Kim Dae-sik (Sasang District); and Jeon’s former student, Professor Baek Gwang-jun of Inha University. Distinguished guests in attendance included Yang Jae-saeng, chairman of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Park Yong-soo, chairman of Golden Blue; Jeong Geun, chairman of On Group; Kim Sang-jin, president of the Asian Taekwondo Union; former PNU presidents Jang Hyuk-pyo and Yoon Soo-in; former Busan superintendent Seol Dong-geun; Gyeongsangnam-do education superintendent candidate Kwon Soon-gi; and many others.
With the local education superintendent election scheduled for June, Jeon’s large-scale event drew attention as a signal of his entrance into the political arena. “Regardless of obstacles, conservative unification in this election must be achieved,” he said, hinting at a possible candidacy.
Jeon earned his Ph.D. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. He previously served as the 20th president of Pusan National University and the 10th president of Tongmyong University. Currently, he chairs the Southeast Development Council and serves on the Presidential Advisory Council on Education Reform and the Presidential Committee for Balanced Regional Development.
