벨기에에서 태어나 캐나다에서 성장한 라라 파비안의 ‘아다지오’는 인간 목소리가 표현할 수 있는 가장 섬세한 감성과 극적인 호흡이 정점에 이른 순간을 기록한 노래다. 이 곡의 기원에는 흥미로운 경로가 있다. 바로크 음악가 토마소 알비노니의 단편 악보를 토대로 20세기 음악학자 레모 지아조토(Remo Giazotto)가 재구성한 ‘아다지오 G단조’를 현대적 발라드로 재해석한 것이다. 1999년 라라 파비안이 공동 작사자로 참여해 첫 영어 싱글로 발표하면서 전 세계의 사랑을 받았다.
라라 파비안은 여러 관점에서 유사한 점이 많은 세계적 가수인 셀린 디옹과 비교하지만, 그녀의 목소리를 온전히 설명하기 어렵다. 소프라노의 극고음에서 저음의 떨림까지 성부의 폭을 넘나들며 감정의 세기를 미세 단위로 조절하는 능력은 그녀의 고유한 재능이다.
또한, 2001년 파리 제니트(Le Zénith) 콘서트에서 ‘Je t’aime’를 불렀을 때, 6천여 명의 관객이 단 한 음도 어긋남 없이 전곡을 합창한 순간은 오늘날까지도 ‘떼창의 정점’으로 평가된다. 비틀스의 ‘Hey Jude’를 계승한 대중의 합창 문화 속에서 가장 감동적인 장면 중 하나다.
‘아다지오’의 한가운데에는 라라의 몸속에 흐르는 시칠리아적 기질의 뜨거운 정한(情恨)이 진하게 배어 있다. 전설적인 기타리스트 스티브 루카서의 투명한 기타 솔로가 유리창에 매달린 이슬처럼 스며드는 순간 곡의 감성은 더욱 깊은 심연으로 가라앉는다. 절제된 슬픔과 폭발적 감정의 교차는 이 노래를 단순한 발라드가 아닌 하나의 서사로 다가온다.
필자가 이 곡을 56번째 Playlist로 선정한 이유는, 55번 곡에서 소개한 카자흐스탄의 신이 내린 음성 디마시 쿠다이베르겐과 이 노래가 맺은 운명적 연결 때문이다. 2017년, 중국 ‘Singer 2017’ 경연에서 무명의 청년을 세계 음악계의 중심으로 올려놓은 곡이 바로 ‘아다지오’였다.
