이 노래의 역사는 아스라하다. 아일랜드 민족시인 윌리엄 버틀러 예이츠(W. B. Yeats)가 시골의 어느 할머니가 흥얼거리던 잊혀가는 민요의 한 자락을 들었다. 시인은 가슴에 저며오는 정감 어린 선율 속에 깃든 삶의 회한을 감지하였다. 1889년, 아일랜드 민요를 대표하는 불멸의 시 작품이 탄생하였다. 이후 1909년, 음악가 허버트 휴즈가 아일랜드 북동부 모언 산맥이 바다와 맞닿은 고향 모언 해안을 배경으로 한 애절한 사랑 노래 ‘모언 해안의 아가씨들(The Maids of the Mourne Shore)’의 전통 선율을 예이츠의 시에 얹어 아일랜드의 영혼을 상징하는 노래가 탄생하였다. 바로 ‘버드나무 정원 아래서’이다.
