정동영 통일부 장관은 지난 3월6일 오후 국회 의정박물관에서 열린 ‘권노갑 100인 평전’ 출판기념회에서 축사를 했습니다. 아래는 이 축사의 주요 내용입니다.
“25년 전 일이 떠오릅니다. 2000년 12월 2일, 청와대 최고위원회 만찬장입니다. 김대중 대통령께서 원탁의 중앙에 계시고, 왼쪽에 권노갑 고문님(현재 민주당 상임고문), 오른쪽에 서영훈 대표, 한화갑, 이인제, 김중권, 박상천, 정동영, 정대철, 김근태, 장태환, 장을병 최고위원이 쭉 둘러 앉아 있었습니다. 분위기는 무거웠습니다. 저는 깊은 숨을 들이마신 뒤에 독하게 마음먹고 내뱉었습니다. '대통령님 옆에 계신 권노갑 고문께서 물러나셔야 합니다. 그게 당을 살리는 길입니다. 정부가 사는 길입니다.' 순간, 김대중 대통령의 얼굴은 석상처럼 굳었습니다. 권노갑 고문님의 얼굴은 경악과 슬픔과 배신감으로 일그러졌습니다. 배은망덕한 하룻강아지다! 정동영의 난이냐? 시대의 쇄신이냐?는 논란이 이어졌습니다. 권 고문님께서는 거인이었습니다. ‘내가 퇴진함으로서 대통령과 당이 편안해질 수 있다면 그것이 나의 길이다. 나는 운명에 따를 것이다.’ 권고문은 순명(順命)! 두 글자를 남기고 우리 곁을 떠났습니다. 순명과 함께 민주당은 정당민주화의 소용돌이 속으로 들어갔고, 국민경선제의 창출과 그리고 그 수혜는 노무현 돌풍으로 이어졌습니다. 세월이 흐른 뒤 뜻하지 않은 사건으로 고문님이 영어의 몸이 되었을 때, 찾아가서 고개를 숙인 저에게 이렇게 말했습니다. ‘정 의원, 나는 이제 자네의 진정을 다 알고 있네. 이미 나는 자네를 용서했네. 이제 마음의 짐을 내려놓고 더 큰 정치를 하시게.’ 저는 거기서 거인의 모습을 보았습니다. 그 후 고문님은 제가 정치인생 속에서 바람이 불 때마다 바람을 막아 준 울타리 역할을 해 주었고, 후보가 됐을 때 전국을 다니시면서 ‘정동영이가 DJ의 적통을 잇는 후보다!’라고 유세를 해주셨습니다. 제가 넘어질 때마다 땅을 짚고 일어나라고 격려하고 일으켜 주신 버팀목이었습니다.

권노갑 고문님! 당신의 백년 인생은 대한민국 민주화의 궤적 그 자체입니다. 당신의 삶은 권력의 중심에 있을 때보다, 오히려 그 권력을 내려놓고 후배들의 길을 닦아준 순명의 순간에 가장 빛났습니다. 저는 당신을 향해 비정한 칼날을 던졌고, 당신은 그 칼을 맞고도 저를 끌어안고서 정치의 품격이 무엇인지 온몸으로 보여주었습니다. 이제 백수를 맞은 당신의 맑은 눈빛에서, 저는 다시금 정치의 본질을 배웁니다. 정치는 칼로 베는 것이 아니라 마음으로 품어 안는 것입니다. 정치는 과거를 징벌하는 것이 아니라 미래를 향해 화해하는 예술이라는 것을 배웁니다. 권노갑 고문님, 부디 만수무강하십시오. 당신은 저의 영원한 스승이며, 민주당의 뿌리이며, 제가 평생 닮고 싶은 인생의 참된 거인입니다. 축하드립니다.”

필자는 그 당시(2000년 12월 2일) 발행됐던 일간 종합지 ‘일간 펜 그리고 자유’의 사주(社主)였었습니다. 박지원 문광부 장관 재임 때(재임기간 1999.5.24.-2000.9.20.) 종합 일간신문지 등록을 하고, 전국지(전국 시판)를 발행하고 있었습니다. 이때 정동영 의원이 '정풍운동(整風運動)'-'정당 쇄신운동'의 일환으로 권노갑 고문의 사퇴를 촉구했었는데, 필자가 사주였던 일간신문 ‘펜 그리고 자유’에서도 이 사실을 특보로 다뤘었습니다.
권노갑 고문측에서는 정동영 의원을 향해 “배은망덕한 하룻강아지” “정동영의 난(亂)”으로 비판했고, 반발이 심했었습니다.
지금 생각하니, 정동영 장관이 회고담에서 언급한 것처럼, 필자 역시 미안한 감이 듭니다. 그 후 '일간 펜 그리고 자유'는 노조의 총파업으로 폐간(1년 6개월 여 기간 발간), 제 인생 수난(受難)의 깊은 상처로 남아지게 됐습니다.
권노갑 고문과 식사를 하는 자리(2025.2.24.)에서 “나는 한화갑 민주당 전 대표님派, 한파(韓派)”라고 언급하면서, 사과를 표한 적이 있었습니다. "진정한 정치란, 서로의 아픔을 서로가 껴안아 주는 것"이라는 생각이 듭니다. “96세 권노갑 고문(민주당 상임고문), 출판기념회를 축하합니다! moonilsuk@naver.com

96-Year-Old Advisor Kwon No-gap's Book Launch and Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young
[Essay-Based Approach] Representative Chung Dong-young's "Correcting the Winds" and "Political Party Reform Movement" and the Author

Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young delivered a congratulatory address at the book launch of "100 Biographies of Kwon No-gap," held at the National Assembly Museum on the afternoon of March 6. Below are the main points of his address. "I remember something from 25 years ago. December 2, 2000, at a dinner for the Supreme Council at the Blue House. President Kim Dae-jung was at the center of the round table, with Advisor Kwon No-gap (currently a senior advisor to the Democratic Party) on his left and Supreme Council members Seo Young-hoon, Han Hwa-gap, Lee In-je, Kim Jung-kwon, Park Sang-cheon, Chung Dong-young, Chung Dae-cheol, Kim Geun-tae, Jang Tae-hwan, and Jang Eul-byung on his right. The atmosphere was heavy. I took a deep breath, then, with a determined resolve, blurted out, 'Advisor Kwon No-gap, standing next to the President, must step down. That's the way to save the party. That's the way to save the government.' In an instant, President Kim Dae-jung's face hardened like a statue. Advisor Kwon No-gap's face was contorted with shock, sorrow, and betrayal. Ungrateful, one-night stand! Was this the Chung Dong-young Rebellion? Was this the renewal of an era? The debate continued. Advisor Kwon was a giant. "If my resignation brings comfort to the president and the party, then that is my path. I will follow my destiny." He left us, leaving behind the two words "obedience" (順命). With "obedience," the Democratic Party entered the whirlwind of party democratization, and the creation of the national primary system, and its benefits, led to the Roh Moo-hyun craze. Years later, when an unexpected incident forced Advisor Kwon to become a young man, he visited me, bowing his head, and said, "Assemblyman Chung, I now fully understand your true feelings. I have already forgiven you. Now, put down your burden and pursue greater politics." There, I saw the face of a giant. After that, Advisor Kwon, I Throughout my political career, you served as a fence, blocking the winds whenever they blew. When I became a candidate, you campaigned across the country, proclaiming, "Chung Dong-young is the candidate who will carry on DJ's legacy!" You were the pillar of support, encouraging me to get back up and stand up whenever I stumbled.
Advisor Kwon No-gap! Your century-long life embodies the trajectory of South Korea's democratization. Your life shone brightest not when you were at the center of power, but when you laid down that power and paved the way for your successors. I hurled a ruthless blade at you, and even after being struck by it, you embraced me, demonstrating with your whole being the true essence of politics. Now, in your clear eyes, now retired, I learn the true essence of politics. Politics is not about cutting with a sword, but about embracing with the heart. I learn that politics is not about punishing the past, but about reconciling with the future. Advisor Kwon No-gap, may you live long and prosper. You are my eternal mentor, the root of the Democratic Party, and the true example of life I aspire to emulate throughout my life. "You're a giant. Congratulations!"
At the time (December 2, 2000), I was the owner of the daily general newspaper "Daily Pen and Freedom." During Park Jie-won's tenure as Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism (May 24, 1999 - September 20, 2000), I registered the general daily newspaper and published a national edition (sold nationwide). At that time, Representative Chung Dong-young, as part of his "Corrections Movement" and "Party Reform Movement," called for the resignation of Advisor Kwon No-gap. The daily newspaper I owned, "Pen and Freedom," also covered this as a special report.
Advisor Kwon No-gap's side criticized Representative Chung Dong-young as an "ungrateful, one-night stand" and "Chung Dong-young's rebellion," and the backlash was fierce.
Looking back, I, too, feel a sense of remorse, as Minister Chung Dong-young mentioned in his memoir. After that, the daily "Pen and Freedom" was shut down (after publishing for about a year and a half) due to a general strike by the labor union, leaving a deep scar on my life's suffering.
During a meal with advisor Kwon No-gap (February 24, 2025), I apologized, saying, "I belong to the Han faction, the Han faction, former Democratic Party leader Han Hwa-gap."
