브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 이란 전쟁이 조만간 끝날 수 있다는 가능성을 언급했다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 전쟁 열흘째인 9일(현지 시간) 미국 플로리다주 도럴에서 기자회견을 열고 "우리는 군사적 목표 달성을 향해 주요한 진전을 이루고 있으며, 어떤 이들은 거의 완료됐다고 말한다"고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 "우리는 이란 내 거의 모든 군사력을 완전히 소탕했다"고 주장하며 군사작전이 상당한 성과를 거두고 있다고 강조했다.
앞서 기자회견 직전에 열린 공화당 연설에서는 이번 전쟁을 "단기 군사행동(short-term excursion)"이라고 표현하기도 했다. 다만 이번 주 안에 전쟁이 끝날 수 있느냐는 질문에 "아니다"라고 명확히 답하면서도 "그러나 조만간이다. 매우 조만간이다"고 말해 조기 종전 가능성이 있음을 시사했다.
백악관은 지난 6일 이번 전쟁이 약 4~6주 정도 진행될 것으로 예상한다고 밝힌 바 있어, 트럼프 대통령의 이날 발언까지 고려한다면 당초 계획보다 종전 시점이 앞당겨질 수 있는 게 아니냐는 기대감이 나오고 있다.
