POSTECH(포항공과대학교)은 지난 10일 포항에 거주하는 조열래(73) 씨가 대학 발전기금으로 1억 원을 기부했다고 밝혔다.
조 씨는 이 대학과 특별한 인연이 없는 시민이다. 졸업생도, 교직원도 아니다. 최근 정년퇴직을 한 뒤 현재 아파트 환경미화원으로 일하며 생활하고 있다. 그럼에도 그는 평생 모은 돈 가운데 1억 원을 대학 발전기금으로 내놓았다.
조 씨는 “평생 열심히 일하며 살아올 수 있었던 것에 늘 감사한 마음이 있었다”며 “이제는 사회에 조금이나마 보답하고 싶었다”고 기부 배경을 설명했다. 그는 또 교육을 통해 나라에 기여한다는 ‘교육보국’의 가치에 공감해 기부처로 POSTECH을 선택했다고 밝혔다.
이번 기부는 특별한 의미를 담고 있다. 조 씨는 6년 전 먼저 세상을 떠난 아내 고(故) 서남섭 여사를 기리기 위해 기부를 아내와 공동 명의로 진행해 달라고 대학 측에 요청했다. 생전에 함께하지 못했지만 더 나은 사회를 향한 마음만큼은 함께 남기고 싶다는 뜻이었다.
기부금은 ‘POSTECH 2.0 교육지구 건립기금’으로 지정돼 미래 과학 인재 양성을 위한 교육 공간 조성에 사용될 예정이다.
김성근 POSTECH 총장은 “대학과 직접적인 인연이 없는 시민께서 교육과 인재 양성의 가치를 믿고 큰 뜻을 전해 주신 데 깊이 감사드린다”며 “조열래 선생님과 고 서남섭 여사님의 뜻을 소중히 받들어 대한민국 과학과 교육 발전에 기여하는 대학으로 더욱 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
포항의 한 시민이 남긴 따뜻한 선택은 거창한 이름보다 더 큰 울림으로 지역 사회에 전해지고 있다.
