이에 대해 이 지사는 해당 의혹의 출발점이 된 보도가 3년 전 제기됐던 사안이며, 이후 사법부 판단을 통해 허위로 인정돼 기사 삭제 판결이 내려졌다고 주장했다. 그는 “법원이 삭제를 명한 사안을 마치 새로운 사실처럼 보도한 것은 사법 판단을 정면으로 부정하는 행위”라고 비판했다.
또 보도 시점에 대해서도 “국민의힘 경선 면접이 진행되는 시점에 맞춰 자극적인 의혹을 다시 제기한 것은 경선 결과에 영향을 미치려는 정치적 기획 보도”라고 주장했다.
녹취록 공개와 관련해서도 “사건의 핵심 증거가 외부로 유출된 경위 자체가 문제이며 일부 발췌된 내용만으로 전체 사건의 맥락을 왜곡했다”고 반박했다. 이어 “협박이나 회유를 받은 사실이 없으며 보조금 지원 의혹 역시 사실이 아니다”라고 강조했다.
이 지사는 언론중재위원회 제소와 함께 명예훼손 및 공직선거법 위반 혐의 고소, 손해배상 청구 등 민·형사상 법적 절차를 진행하겠다고 밝혔다.
정치권에서도 논란을 둘러싼 반응이 엇갈렸다. 국민의힘 일각에서는 “경선 국면에서 특정 후보에게 불리한 의혹을 집중적으로 제기하는 보도는 정치적 의도가 의심될 수 있다”며 신중한 보도를 촉구했다. 반면 더불어민주당 측은 “의혹이 제기된 만큼 철저한 수사를 통해 사실관계를 명확히 밝혀야 한다”며 진상 규명을 요구했다.
