University of Luxembourg는 룩셈부르크 시내에서
기차로 약 20~30분 거리에 있는 벨발(Belval) 지역에 위치한
이 나라의 유일한 종합대학이다.
이 대학에는 의과대학이 없으며, 유럽 여러 나라에서 온 학생들이 공부한다.
수업은 영어, 프랑스어, 독일어 등 여러 언어로 진행되고,
학비도 다른 유럽 국가에 비해 비교적 저렴한 편이다.
룩셈부르크에서는 버스와 트램, 그리고 기차 2등석을 무료로 이용할 수 있다.
다만 기차의 1등석은 유료이기 때문에 추가 요금을 내고 이용하는 승객들도 있다.
나는 룩셈부르크 대학에 처음 도착했을 때 꽤 놀랐다.
대학이 위치한 벨발 지역은 과거 철강 산업이 발달했던 곳으로,
옛 산업 시설을 보존하면서 대학 캠퍼스로 재개발된 지역이기 때문이다.
일부 건물은 과거 철강 공장의 구조를 활용해 개조한 것이며,
도서관인 Luxembourg Learning Centre 역시 옛 산업 건물을 재활용해 만든 공간이다.
도서관 내부에는 넓은 열람실뿐 아니라
학생들이 조용히 공부할 수 있도록 1인용 칸막이 학습 석과
다양한 학습 공간이 마련되어 있어,
과거 산업의 흔적과 현대적인 학습 환경이 함께 어우러진 독특한 분위기를 느낄 수 있다.
비고
룩셈부르크에서 대중교통이 무료인 이유는
주민들이 이미 높은 세금을 부담하고 있기 때문이다.
많은 사람들이 오해하지만, 완전히 ‘공짜’인 복지는 존재하지 않는다.
관광객에게도 무료로 제공된다는 사실은
그만큼 전반적인 물가와 호텔비가 높다는 점을 의미하기도 한다.
실제로 체감 물가는 유럽에서도 손꼽히게 비싼 취리히와 크게 다르지 않다.
무료 기차를 이용해 보니 통화하는 승객들이 많아 다소 소란스럽다는 느낌도 들었다.
그 때문에 일부 사람들이 왜 유료 좌석이나 다른 교통수단을 선호하는지 이해가 되기도 했다.
도시는 전반적으로 상당히 엄격하고 질서정연한 분위기를 풍긴다.
학교를 포함해 보안 시설도 잘 갖추어져 있는 편이다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 교통비가 비싸더라도
개인적으로는 취리히가 여전히 더 매력적인 도시라는 생각에는 변함이 없다.
The University of Luxembourg is the only comprehensive university in Luxembourg
and is located in the Belval area, about 20–30 minutes by train from Luxembourg City.
The university does not have a medical school,
and students from many European countries study there.
Courses are taught in several languages, including English,
French, German, and the tuition fees are relatively affordable compared to
with those in other European countries.
In Luxembourg, buses, trams, and second-class train travel are free of charge.
However, first-class train seats require an additional fee,
so some passengers choose to pay for the quieter and more comfortable space.
When I first arrived at the university, I was quite surprised.
The Belval area, where the campus is located,
used to be a major steel-industry site that has been redeveloped into a modern
university district while preserving parts of the old industrial structures.
Some campus buildings were converted from former steel factory facilities,
and the university library, the Luxembourg Learning Centre,
is also a renovated industrial building.
Inside the library, there are not only spacious reading areas
but also individual study cubicles
and various learning spaces where students can study quietly.

University of Luxembourgはルクセンブルクで唯一の総合大学であり、
ルクセンブルク市から電車で約20〜30分のベルヴァル地区に位置している。

私が初めて大学に到着したとき、少し驚いた。
大学があるベルヴァル地区は、かつて鉄鋼産業が盛んだった場所で、
その産業施設の一部を保存しながら大学キャンパスとして再開発された地域だからである。
キャンパスの建物の中には、昔の製鉄工場の構造を活用して改修されたものもあり、
大学図書館である Luxembourg Learning Centre もまた、
旧産業施設を改装して利用している建物である。
図書館の内部には広い閲覧スペースだけでなく、
学生が静かに勉強できる個別の学習ブースやさまざまな学習スペースが設けられている。
そこでは産業の歴史の名残と現代的な学習環境が共存する独特の雰囲気を感じることができる。
