포스코청암재단(이사장 장인화)은 지난 12일 서울 포스코센터에서 제22회 한국유학장학 증서수여식 및 졸업 환송식을 열고 신규 장학생에게 장학증서를 수여하는 한편 학업을 마친 졸업 장학생들의 새로운 출발을 축하했다.
재단은 올해 포스코한국유학장학생 19명을 새롭게 선발했다. 포스코한국유학장학은 2005년부터 해외 우수 인재들이 국내 대학원에서 석·박사 과정을 이수할 수 있도록 학비와 생활비를 지원하는 글로벌 장학사업이다. 지난 22여 년간 총 562명의 장학생이 한국에서 학업과 연구를 이어왔으며 누적 지원금은 약 230억 원에 이른다.
특히 올해는 기존 아시아권 중심 선발에서 벗어나 대상 국가를 전 세계 27개국으로 확대해 의미를 더했다. 신규 장학생들은 독일, 미국, 영국 등 유럽·미주 지역과 브라질 등 중남미, 말레이시아·베트남·인도네시아 등 아시아 국가에서 선발됐다.
이들은 서울대학교와 고려대학교, 연세대학교, 포스텍(POSTECH), 한국학중앙연구원 한국학대학원, KDI국제정책대학원 등 국내 주요 대학원에서 생명과학, 공학, 행정학, 한국학 등 다양한 분야의 연구와 학업을 이어갈 예정이다. 서로 다른 문화와 전공 배경을 가진 장학생들이 한국에서의 학업과 교류를 통해 글로벌 시각과 전문성을 키울 것으로 기대된다.
이번 행사는 새로 선발된 장학생들의 출발을 축하하는 동시에 학업을 마친 장학생들의 새로운 여정을 응원하기 위해 마련됐다. 졸업 장학생 중 일부는 박사학위 취득 후 포스트닥(Post-doc) 연구원으로 연구를 이어가며, 일부는 논문 마무리를 위해 한 학기 추가 재학하며 연구를 심화할 예정이다.
포스코청암재단은 앞으로도 장학생들이 안정적인 환경에서 학업에 전념할 수 있도록 지원을 이어가는 한편, 장학사업을 통해 형성된 글로벌 인재 네트워크가 지속될 수 있도록 다양한 교류 프로그램을 운영할 계획이다.
한편 포스코청암재단은 포스코의 창업 이념인 창의존중·인재중시·봉사정신을 확산하기 위해 제정한 포스코청암상을 운영하고 있으며, 지난 2월 제20회 수상자를 선정했다. 시상식은 오는 4월 22일 서울 포스코센터에서 열릴 예정이다.
