이재명 대통령이 13일 충북 청주 공립 발달장애 이은 특수학교를 방문해 "장애 아동뿐만 아닌 그 가족들이 짊어진 삶 무게가 얼마나 무거운지 잘 알고 있다"고 밝혔다고 청와대가 전했다.
전은수 부대변인은 이날 오후 서면 브리핑에서 "이번 방문은 특수교육 현장 목소리를 직접 듣고 국가 교육 책임을 강화하기 위한 행보 일환으로 마련됐다"며 이같이 전했다.
이은 특수학교는 지난 2023년 개교한 충북 청주 소재 전국 최초로 유치원·초등 과정을 중등 과정과 분리해 운영하는 발달장애 특수학교다.
이 대통령은 학교 관계자·학부모들 간담회에서 "장애 유형에 따라 유·초등 과정을 분리 운영하는 게 교육적 측면에서 더욱 효과적일 수 있다"며 특수교사들에게 "특별한 사명감을 갖고 이 길을 선택한 여러분의 훌륭한 마음이 아이들에게 잘 전달될 수 있도록 그 사랑의 마음을 영원히 잘 가꿔나가 달라”고 주문했다.
간담회 후 이 대통령은 상상놀이터·심리안정실·감각통합실 등 학생들을 위한 맞춤형 시설들을 둘러본 후 교실을 찾아 수업을 직접 참관했다.
또 학생 곁에 앉아 신문지 모자에 함께 동물 그림을 붙여 머리에 씌워주고, 수업에 사용할 악기를 골라 연주 연습을 돕기도 했다.
