특히 올해는 ▲세계지질공원 행정협의회 구성 ▲국제 네트워크 협력 강화 ▲지질공원 커뮤니티센터 전시시설 구축 ▲지질공원 해설사 양성 및 교육 프로그램 확대 ▲지오파트너 협력 확대 등 5대 핵심 사업을 추진해 지질공원의 위상을 높이고 지역 관광 활성화에도 힘쓸 방침이다.
김경희 부군수는 “단양이 유네스코 세계지질공원으로 선정된 이후 새로운 도약을 준비하는 중요한 시기”라며 “지질유산 보전과 관광·교육 연계를 통해 지역 경쟁력을 높이고 주민들이 체감할 수 있는 성과를 만들어 가겠다”고 말했다.
