‘영덕핵시설저지30km연대’는 16일 영덕군민회관에서 열리는 신규원전 유치 공개 토론회에 앞서 기자회견을 열고 “영덕군이 졸속 여론조사와 형식적인 토론회를 통해 군민 의견을 왜곡하고 있다”며 유치 추진 중단과 충분한 공론화를 촉구했다.
앞서 영덕군은 지난 5일 ‘신규원전 유치 공개 토론회’를 16일 개최한다고 밝히며, 군민과 찬반단체, 전문가, 관계 공무원이 참여해 주민의 알 권리를 보장하고 정책 신뢰도를 높이기 위한 자리라고 설명했다. 토론회는 발제와 패널 토론 65분, 청중 질의응답 35분으로 진행될 예정이다.

토론회 패널 구성에 대해서도 문제를 제기했다. 단체는 찬성 측 패널로 참여하는 인사들이 원전 산업과 밀접한 관계가 있다며 “원전 건설로 인한 지역 주민의 삶과 환경 문제보다는 산업적 이해관계에 치우친 논의가 될 가능성이 크다”고 주장했다.
이어 “원전 온배수로 인한 해양 생태계 변화와 주민 건강 피해 등은 오랜 기간 제기돼 왔지만 충분한 조사와 공식적인 인정이 이뤄지지 않았다”며 “정부와 지방자치단체는 신규 원전 유치 여부를 서두르기보다 지역사회와 충분한 논의를 거쳐 결정해야 한다”고 요구했다.
