오늘을 살고 있는 현대인들은 실상(實像)이 아닌 허상(虛像) 속에 살고 있을 수 있다.
포털사들의 알고리즘(algorithm-연산작업) 조작이 얼마든지 가능한 시대이기 때문이다.
인터넷에서의 알고리즘(뉴스나 SNS가 '언론 통제'와 연관된, 추천 알고리즘 등을 말한다) 통제. 이를 통해 인터넷 언론의 통제가 실시간 가능하다.
그러므로, 어떤 목적을 가진 이들에게는 알고리즘의 통제-유혹이 솔깃하다. 알고리즘의 조작을 통한 인터넷 언론 통제는 기술적으로 얼마든지 가능하다. 또한 실제로 이를 둘러싼 논란이 지속적으로 발생하고 있다. 현대인의 뉴스 소비가 포털 사이트나 SNS의 추천 알고리즘에 크게 의존하고 있기 때문이다.
포털이나 플랫폼 사업자가 특정 언론사 또는 특정 언론사가 생산한 뉴스나 정보를 우선-잘 노출되도록 하거나, 특정 언론사가 생산한 뉴스-정보들은 배제되도록, 알고리즘을 설정해놓고 있어서 이다. 이를 통해, 대중의 정보접근 권한에 막대한 영향을 미치고 있다.
우리나라 방송통신위원회는 한 포털사가 뉴스 검색 알고리즘의 '언론사 인기도 순위' 산정 방식을 변경, 특정 언론사에 불리하거나 유리하게 개입했는지에 대해 실태 점검을 진행했었다.
유럽연합(EU)도 국제적인 포털사의 뉴스 알고리즘 조작 여부에 대해 조사하는 등 플랫폼의 정보 독점과 조작 가능성을 엄격히 감시하고 있다.

최근, 통과된 '허위 조작 정보 근절법' 등은 징벌적 손해배상이나 광범위한 심의를 통해 언론의 자기검열을 유도하고, 표현의 자유를 위축시킬 수 있다는 비판을 받고 있다.
인터넷 언론사들이 포털 뉴스 노출을 통한 광고 수익에 의존하는 구조에서, 플랫폼의 알고리즘 변경은 개별 언론사의 생존을 위협할 수 있는 강력한 통제 수단이 된다.
알고리즘은 '중립적 기술'처럼 보이지만, 이를 설계하고 운영하는 주체의 의도에 따라 합법적 혹은 비공식적인 언론 통제 도구가 될 위험성을 내포하고 있다.

일부 국내외 포털이 알고리즘으로 뉴스-정보의 흐름을 조작한다면, 기가 막힐 일이다. 인터넷 언론에 속한 기자들은 진실된 사실이 담긴 뉴스-정보를 생산하는데 전력투구 중이다. 그런데, 그렇게 힘들게 생산된 뉴스-정보들을 알고리즘 조작으로 왜곡 전파한다면, 종국적으로 국가를 망하게 하는 삿된 짓들이랄 수 있다. 그리하여, 왜곡된 정보들을 보는 독자들은 허상(虛像)인 그림자 정보에 중독되거나 허구(虛構)의 노예로 전락할 것이다. 기자들을 허수아비로 전락시키는 야만적인 일을 중단해야 한다. 그러므로, 알고리즘 조작은 무서운 범죄 행태이다. 고로, 근절돼야 한다.
