19일 태백시에 따르면, 시는 대대적인 도시재생사업과 교통망 확충, 주거환경 개선, 상권 활성화를 동시다발적으로 추진해 '관문-체류-정주-상권'으로 이어지는 완성도 높은 도시 구조를 단계적으로 구축할 계획이다.
■ 관문을 넘어 '체류 거점'으로… 도시재생 및 교통망 확충
가장 핵심적인 변화는 태백역 사거리 일원을 중심으로 한 250억 원 규모의 지역특화 도시재생사업이다. 특히 영암고속과 업무협약을 맺고 추진 중인 버스터미널 현대화 사업을 통해, 단순한 여객 시설을 여행자 라운지와 관광 안내 기능을 두루 갖춘 복합 거점시설로 완전히 탈바꿈시킨다.
아울러 155억 원 규모의 태백역 리모델링 사업과 최신 EMU-150(ITX-마음) 열차 운행, 영월~태백~삼척 고속도로 사업 등 광역 교통망 확충이 맞물려 태백역 일대가 태백의 절대적인 교통·관광 거점으로 도약할 전망이다.
