[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 함안군은 오는 20일부터 21일 이틀간 칠원읍사무소 앞 도로 일원에서 함안 삼칠 지역을 대표하는 민속문화 행사인 ‘칠원고을줄다리기’ 행사를 개최한다고 밝혔다.
칠원고을줄다리기 행사는 주민 화합의 장을 마련하고 한 해의 풍요와 안녕을 기원하기 위해 열리던 전통 민속행사로, 1960년대까지 매해 음력 2월 초하루에 칠원읍 용산천에서 이어져 왔다.
이후 근대화와 도시화로 중단됐다가 2005년부터 행사가 재현돼 올해 16회째를 맞았다.
행사의 대표 프로그램인 줄다리기는 청룡과 백호 두 팀이 참여하는 대항전으로, 3000여명의 주민이 윗줄인 청룡줄과 아랫줄인 백호줄로 나눠 줄을 당겨 3전 2승제로 승부를 겨룬다.
이때 사용되는 줄은 길이는 130m, 무게는 40톤에 달하며, 집집이 모은 500동의 짚으로 새끼를 꼬고, 이를 수십 가닥 꼰 작은 줄을 만든 다음 다시 여러 가닥을 꼬아 지름이 1m가 훨씬 넘는 큰 줄을 만드는 방식으로 제작된다.
큰 줄의 양옆에는 사람이 당길 수 있도록 손잡이 줄을 무수히 매단다.
줄다리기에서 이기면 풍년이 들고 병도 생기지 않는다는 믿음이 있어 청룡과 백호 양팀 간에는 팽팽한 접전이 이뤄지며 해마다 많은 구경꾼이 모여 장관을 이룬다.
본격적인 줄다리기 행사는 윗줄(청룡대장) 아랫줄(백호대장)로 나눠 3000여 명이 참여해 3전 2승제 대항전이 펼쳐진다.
함안군 관계자는 “칠원고을줄다리기는 소중하고 아름다운 우리 지역의 전통문화이자, 공동체 의식을 함양하고 주민들을 단합하여 지역 발전의 토대가 되는 소중한 자산이다”며 “이번 행사가 군민이 화합하는 즐겁고 풍요로운 시간으로 지속되도록 군에서도 함안의 문화유산을 지키고 알리는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
