충남 홍성군이 서부해안 관광벨트의 핵심 축인 해안 관광도로 경관 정비사업을 본격화하며, 남당항 일대를 중심으로 서해안 대표 관광도시로의 도약을 서두르고 있다.
홍성군은 그동안 속동~어사항 구간 해안도로 일대의 조망을 방해하던 잡목과 둔턱 등으로 인해 관광객 불편이 컸던 문제를 해소하기 위해, 해당 토지 소유자들과 장기 협의를 진행해왔다.
최근 협의를 마무리함에 따라 오는 6월까지 군유지 및 사유지를 대상으로 잡목 제거와 부지 정지공사에 착수할 예정이다.
이번 정비를 통해 해안 산책로 단절 구간이 연결되고, 드라이브를 즐기며 서해의 시원한 풍광을 한눈에 감상할 수 있는 ‘명품 해안도로’ 조성 기반이 마련될 것으로 보인다.
이와 함께 전국적인 관광 명소로 주목받는 남당항 무지개도로 주변도 변신이 예고된다. 군은 7월까지 서측 방파제 입구의 급경사지 구간을 중심으로 낙석 위험을 제거하고, 쓰레기 무단투기를 방지하는 경관형 정비로 보행자 안전과 미관을 모두 강화할 계획이다.
이은영 홍성군 체육관광과장은 “서부해안 관광도로는 홍성을 찾는 관광객에게 첫인상을 남기는 상징적인 구간”이라며 “바다 조망을 극대화한 경관 중심의 해안도로를 조성하고, 걷기 여행과 드라이브 코스를 아우르는 체류형 관광기반을 지속 확대하겠다”고 밝혔다.
