중동의 긴장이 다시 세계의 심장을 조여 오는 지금, 폭격의 굉음이 하늘을 가르고 대립과 갈등이 국경을 흔들고 있다. 불안은 지역을 넘어 인류 공동의 운명이 되었다. 이러한 시대 상황에서 이란계 영국 가수 사미 유수프의 노래 ‘진주(Pearl)’를 듣는 것은 국경이 없는 인류라는 존재의 중심을 묻는 것이다.
1980년 이란 테헤란에서 태어나 영국에서 성장한 사미 유수프는 이슬람 영성 전통과 서구 오케스트레이션을 결합하여 독자적 음악 세계를 구축해 온 아티스트다. 그는 피아노와 바이올린 같은 서구 악기뿐 아니라 우드(oud), 타르(tar), 톰박(tonbak)과 같은 중동 전통 악기를 다루는 다중 연주자이며 영어, 아랍어, 페르시아어, 터키어 등 여러 언어로 노래한다. 그러나 그의 음악적 정체성을 설명하는 핵심은 악기나 언어가 아니라 ‘근원(Source)’을 향한 지속적인 탐구에 있다.
