POSTECH은 ‘2026 QS 학문 분야별 세계대학평가’에서 ‘자연과학(Natural Sciences)’ 64위, ‘공학(Engineering & Technology)’ 67위를 기록하며 두 분야 모두 세계 60위권에 진입했다고 밝혔다. 이는 지난해 발표된 ‘2026 QS 세계대학평가’ 종합 순위(102위)보다 40계단 이상 높은 성과다.
이 같은 격차는 평가 방식의 차이에서 비롯된 것으로 분석된다. QS 세계대학평가 종합 순위는 평판도(45%)를 포함한 다양한 지표를 종합해 산출되며, 인문·사회·의학 등 전 분야를 아우르는 응답자가 평가에 참여한다. 이 구조에서는 이공계 특성화 대학의 강점이 상대적으로 희석될 수 있다.
반면 학문 분야별 평가는 평판도 비중이 60~70%로 더 높고, 응답자 역시 자신의 전공 분야를 선택한 뒤 해당 분야에서 우수 대학을 평가하는 방식으로 진행된다. 즉, 공학과 자연과학 분야는 해당 분야의 학계 및 산업계 전문가들이 중심이 돼 평가하는 구조다.
POSTECH의 이번 성과는 소수정예 교육과 연구 중심 대학으로서 축적해온 이공계 경쟁력이 실제 현장에서 인정받은 결과로 풀이된다.
박성민 POSTECH 대외협력처장은 “이번 결과는 ‘규모’가 아닌 ‘전문성’으로 경쟁해 온 성과”라며 “이공계 특성화 대학의 본질은 선택과 집중을 통해 도전적 연구와 혁신적 교육을 구현하는 데 있다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “앞으로도 대학의 강점 분야에 역량을 집중해 경쟁력을 강화해 나가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
한편, 지난해 11월 발표된 중앙일보 학문 분야별 대학평가에서는 POSTECH과 성균관대학교가 ‘자연과학’과 ‘공학’ 전 분야에서 최우수 등급을 받은 것으로 나타났다.

POSTECH’s competitiveness has been confirmed once again in an expert-centered evaluation.
POSTECH announced that it ranked 64th in ‘Natural Sciences’ and 67th in ‘Engineering & Technology’ in the ‘2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject,’ entering the top 60 in both fields globally. This is an achievement more than 40 places higher than its overall ranking (102nd) in the ‘2026 QS World University Rankings’ announced last year.
This gap is analyzed to stem from differences in evaluation methods. The QS World University Rankings overall ranking is calculated by synthesizing various indicators, including reputation (45%), and respondents from all fields, including humanities, social sciences, and medicine, participate in the evaluation. Under this structure, the strengths of universities specializing in science and engineering can be relatively diluted.
In contrast, evaluations by academic field carry a higher weight of reputation at 60–70%, and respondents evaluate universities within that field after selecting their major. In other words, the engineering and natural sciences fields are structured so that experts from academia and industry in those respective sectors play a central role in the evaluation.
POSTECH’s recent achievement is interpreted as a result of the competitiveness in science and engineering, accumulated as a research-oriented university focused on elite education, being recognized in the field.
Park Sung-min, Director of External Affairs at POSTECH, stated, “This result is the outcome of competing based on ‘expertise’ rather than ‘scale.’ The essence of a university specializing in science and engineering lies in realizing challenging research and innovative education through selection and concentration.” He added, “We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness by concentrating our capabilities on the university’s strengths.”
Meanwhile, the JoongAng Ilbo university rankings by academic field, announced last November, revealed that POSTECH and Sungkyunkwan University received the highest ratings across all fields of ‘natural sciences’ and ‘engineering.’
