충청남도가 지역의 역사와 생태적 가치를 간직한 소중한 자연유산인 ‘보호수’를 지키기 위해 대대적인 정비 사업에 나선다. 도는 보호수의 체계적인 관리와 건강한 생육 환경 조성을 위해 올해 총 11억 원의 예산을 투입한다고 29일 밝혔다.
현재 충남도 내에는 산림보호법에 따라 역사적·학술적 가치가 높거나 노령 및 희귀성으로 보호가 필요한 나무 총 1,822그루가 보호수로 지정되어 있다.
품종별 현황을 살펴보면 △느티나무가 1,179그루로 압도적으로 많으며, 이어 △소나무 145그루 △은행나무 99그루 △팽나무 84그루 순으로 집계됐다. 충남도는 이들 나무가 단순한 식물을 넘어 지역 공동체의 상징이자 생태계의 핵심 역할을 수행하고 있다고 보고 있다.
올해 관리 대상은 나무의 건강 상태(수세)와 생육 환경 조사 결과에 따라 선정된 150그루다.
충남도는 이들 보호수를 대상으로 전문가의 진단을 거쳐 전문 의료 처치, 생육 기반 강화, 편의 시설 정비 등 전문 처치를 시행할 계획이다.
