베트남의 국민 여가수 칸 리(1945~)가 부른 ‘옛 사랑(Diễm Xưa)’은 베트남의 영혼으로 평가받는 음악가 찐꽁선(1939~2001)이 1960년에 발표한 곡으로, 시대의 아픔과 개인의 서사가 겹겹이 쌓여 있는 노래다.
지난해 여름 베트남에서 중견 기업 NURI TECH를 이끌고 계시는 김시일 회장님의 배려로 현지 직원 꾸이(Quy)님의 도움을 받아 가사를 번역해 소개한 적이 있었다. 당시 저작권 문제로 노래의 1절만을 소개했던 아쉬움이 남아 이번 ‘가슴으로 듣는 Playlist’ 시리즈에서 온전히 다시 살펴보려 한다.
1960년대 초 사이공의 작은 카페에서 시작된 칸 리와 찐꽁선의 만남은 운명적이었다. 무명이던 작곡가의 곡을 칸 리가 부르기 시작하면서 베트남 음악사의 새로운 장이 열렸다. 그녀의 낮고 깊은 알토 음색은 찐꽁선이 가사에 담아낸 시적이며 철학적인 사유를 그대로 품어냈다. 맨발로 무대에 서서 노래하던 그녀의 모습은 순수와 저항의 상징이 되었으며 사람들은 이들의 관계를 미국의 전설적인 포크 듀오 밥 딜런과 조안 바에즈에 비유하며 열광했다.
