맹수석 대전광역시교육감 예비후보가 지난 30일 발표된 ‘대전 진보 교육감 단일화’ 결과에 대해 정당성과 대표성을 상실한 ‘그들만의 해프닝’이라며 강하게 반발하고 나섰다.
맹 예비후보는 31일 입장문을 통해 이번 단일화 과정이 형식과 내용 모두에서 시민의 기대를 저버렸음을 지적하며 조목조목 비판의 목소리를 높였다.
가장 먼저 지적된 문제는 참여 규모의 영세성이다.
맹 예비후보는 144만 대전 시민 중 단 1127명만이 참여한 이번 결과를 두고 "전체 시민의 0.1%에도 미치지 못하는 수치"라며 날을 세웠다.
특히 인구 39만의 세종시가 5000여 명의 시민참여단을 모집한 사례나, 지난 2018년 대전에서 1만 5000여 명이 참여했던 전례와 비교하면 이번 결과는 시민적 공감대를 형성하는 데 완전히 실패한 참사라고 규정했다.
특정 조직이나 지인 중심의 제한적 동원에 그친 결과물로 '진보 진영 단일 후보'라는 명칭을 사용하는 것은 시민 의사를 심각하게 왜곡하는 처사라는 주장이다.
절차적 투명성과 정당성에 대한 비판도 이어졌다.
맹 예비후보는 단일화의 한 축이었던 강재구 교수가 정식 예비후보 등록조차 하지 않은 상태에서 과정에 참여한 점을 문제 삼았다.
선거에 임하는 후보라면 기탁금 납부와 공적 검증, 법적 책임을 감수하는 예비후보 등록이 최소한의 도리임에도, 이러한 기본적인 절차를 회피한 인물과 단일화를 진행한 것은 그 자체로 정당성을 훼손하는 행위라고 지적했다.

아울러 후보 간 충분한 협의를 바탕으로 한 정상적인 단일화 논의를 즉각 다시 시작할 것을 촉구했다.
맹수석 예비후보는 "대전 시민들은 이 모든 부당한 절차를 지켜보고 있다"며 "시민들이 납득할 수 있는 공정한 단일화 논의가 이루어질 때까지 대전 교육의 미래를 지키기 위한 책임 있는 역할을 멈추지 않겠다"고 밝혔다.
