정치권에서도 이번 사업이 ‘미래산업 전환의 분수령’이 될 것이라며 의미를 부각시키는 분위기다.
구자근 국회의원(국민의힘·구미갑)은 3일 구미시청에서 열린 구미시와 한국산업기술시험원(KTR) 간 업무협약식에서 “KTR 대구경북본부 구미 설립은 단순한 기관 이전을 넘어 지역 산업의 체질을 바꾸는 중요한 전환점”이라고 평가했다.
이번 협약을 통해 KTR은 기존 대구경북센터와 구미지사를 통합해 ‘KTR 대구경북본부(구미)’를 설립할 계획이다. 초기에는 석·박사급 전문 인력 50여 명이 근무하며, 향후 약 80명 규모까지 인원을 점진적으로 확대해 나간다는 방침이다.
무게 중심은 이차전지 산업의 ‘전주기 대응 체계’ 구축에 있다. 시험, 평가, 인증 기능이 지역 내에 들어서면 기업들이 제품 검증과 인증을 신속하게 마칠 수 있어 개발 기간을 줄이고 비용도 크게 아낄 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.
관련 인프라도 단계적으로 마련된다. 오는 7월 준공 예정인 배터리 서비스 시험 실증기반 사업에는 404억 원의 사업비가 투입되고, 이 가운데 100억 원은 국비로 지원받는다. 이어 2028년까지는 인공지능 기반 사용후 배터리 평가 플랫폼도 구축될 예정이며, 이에 233억 원의 추가 투자도 계획돼 있다.
구자근 의원은 “구미가 대구경북을 넘어 대한민국 미래산업을 주도하는 중심 도시로 자리매김할 수 있도록 모든 역량을 집중하겠다”고 강조했다.

Initially, approximately 50 specialized personnel with master's or doctoral degrees will work there, with plans to gradually expand the workforce to around 80 people in the future. The focus is on establishing a "full-cycle response system" for the secondary battery industry. It is expected that bringing testing, evaluation, and certification functions to the region will enable companies to quickly complete product verification and certification, thereby reducing development time and saving significant costs.
Related infrastructure will also be prepared in stages. The Battery Service Testing and Demonstration Base project, scheduled for completion this coming July, will receive a budget of 40.4 billion won, of which 10 billion won will be funded by the state. Furthermore, an AI-based used battery evaluation platform is scheduled to be built by 2028, with an additional investment of 23.3 billion won planned for this purpose.
Representative Koo Ja-geun emphasized, "I will concentrate all my capabilities to ensure that Gumi establishes itself as a central city leading Korea's future industries, extending beyond the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region."
