3일 군에 따르면 2023년 농촌유휴시설활용 지역활성화사업 공모사업에 선정돼 사업비 5억 원을 들여 용화면 용화리 일대의 농촌유휴시설에 대한 정비사업을 펼쳤다.
면 인구가 900명이 채 안 되는 오지마을이지만 오랫동안 방치됐던 옛 농촌지도소와 예비군중대본부가 카페와 방앗간으로 탈바꿈해 인구 감소로 침체한 시골 마을에 활기를 불어넣고 있다.
운영은 이 마을에 거주하는 북향민, 귀농귀촌인 등 주민 19명으로 구성된 새삶협동조합이 맡았다.
주민들은 직접 집기와 커피 원두를 선택하고 구입하는 등 하나부터 열까지 의논을 통해 결정할 뿐만 아니라, 바리스타 자격증을 획득해 커피를 내리고 지역 특산물인 포도와 블루베리로 음료를 만드느라 분주하다.
새삶협동조합 이효자 대표는 “바리스타 자격증은 조합원 모두 소지하고 있을 정도로 회원들의 열정이 많다”며, “지역 특산물을 활용한 음료와 디저트 레시피도 개발하고 판매해서 성공 사례로 자리 잡기를 꿈꾸고 있다”고 말했다.
방앗간은 기름 짜고 고추 빻는 최신 시설과 장비를 갖췄다.
그동안 용화면에 방앗간이 없어 인근 전북 무주 소재 방앗간을 이용했던 주민들의 불편 사항을 해소하고, 특히 어르신들이 직접 생산한 지역 특산품인 호두를 짠 기름은 민주지산자연휴양림을 찾는 관광객들에게 벌써 입소문을 타고 있다.
