그간 ‘교통 소외지역’으로 꼽혀온 이들 지역에 대규모 도로망이 구축되면서 인천 내 주요 거점은 물론 서울 등 인접 지역과의 접근성이 개선될 것으로 보인다.
지역 간 불균형 해소에도 속도가 붙을 전망이다.
인천시가 10일, 검단신도시를 포함한 서북부 지역과 강화·옹진을 중심으로 총 2조 5천억 원 규모의 도로 인프라 확충 사업을 본격 추진한다고 밝혔다.
인천시에 따르면, 이번 사업은 급증하는 교통 수요에 대응하고, 인천 권역 간 연계와 광역 이동 편의성을 강화해 지역 간 교통 격차를 줄이고 균형발전을 뒷받침하기 위한 핵심 프로젝트다.
첫째, 검단지역에서는 검단양촌IC~봉수대로, 금곡동~대곡동 구간 등 총 16개 도로사업이 추진된다.
총연장 40.73km, 사업비는 약 1조 6,137억 원에 달한다.
해당 사업들은 2026년 4개 사업을 시작으로 2027년 5개, 2028년 4개, 이후 3개 사업이 순차적으로 개통될 예정이다.
주요 간선도로가 단계적으로 연결되면 상습 정체 구간이 해소되고, 지역 간 이동 시간이 단축되는 등 시민 체감형 교통 개선 효과가 기대된다.

옹진 지역 역시 교통 여건이 크게 개선된다.
영종과 신도를 연결하는 신도평화대교와 북도면 광역시도68호선이 연내 개통을 앞두고 있어, 섬 지역 주민의 이동 편의와 정주 여건이 한층 나아질 것으로 기대된다.
시는 이번 도로망 확충이 단순한 교통 개선을 넘어 관광 활성화와 지역경제 회복의 기반이 될 것으로 보고 있다.
접근성 한계에 묶여 있던 강화·옹진 역시 새로운 성장축으로 전환될 것으로 기대된다.
