POSTECH은 지난 10일 ‘POSTECH 40주년 기념 강연 시리즈’의 일환으로 베이커 교수와 배우자인 하넬레 루오홀라-베이커 교수를 초청해 환담과 식수 행사, 강연 등을 진행했다.
이날 베이커 교수는 ‘Protein Design Using Deep Learning’을 주제로 딥러닝 기반 단백질 설계 연구의 발전 과정과 향후 가능성을 소개했다. 이어 루오홀라-베이커 교수는 기조강연을 통해 생명과학 분야의 최신 연구 성과를 공유했다.
이번 방문은 학문적 교류를 바탕으로 이뤄졌다. POSTECH 화학공학과 이상민 교수는 2021년 2월부터 약 2년 9개월간 베이커 교수 연구실에서 박사후연구원으로 활동한 바 있다.
베이커 교수는 인공지능과 컴퓨터 기술을 활용해 자연에 존재하지 않는 단백질을 설계하는 ‘단백질 설계’ 분야를 개척한 세계적 석학으로, 해당 연구 공로를 인정받아 2024년 노벨화학상을 수상했다. 양측은 같은 해 12월 공동 연구 성과를 국제 학술지 네이처에 게재하기도 했다.
POSTECH 관계자는 “베이커 교수 내외의 방문이 학생들과 구성원들에게 큰 영감을 주는 계기가 됐다”며 “이번 강연 시리즈가 개교 40주년을 기념하는 대표 학술 행사로 자리매김하길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

To mark its 40th anniversary, POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) hosted a special lecture by inviting Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate Professor David Baker of the University of Washington.
On the 10th, as part of the "POSTECH 40th Anniversary Lecture Series," POSTECH invited Professor Baker and his wife, Professor Hanelle Ruoholla-Baker, to participate in a cordial discussion, a tree-planting ceremony, and a lecture.
On the same day, Professor Baker presented on the topic of "Protein Design Using Deep Learning," introducing the development process and future possibilities of deep learning-based protein design research. Following this, Professor Ruoholla-Baker shared the latest research achievements in the field of life sciences through a keynote lecture.
This visit was made possible through academic exchange. Professor Sang-Min Lee of the Department of Chemical Engineering at POSTECH worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Baker's laboratory for approximately two years and nine months, starting in February 2021.
Professor Baker is a world-renowned scholar who pioneered the field of "protein design," which involves designing proteins that do not exist in nature using artificial intelligence and computer technology. He was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in recognition of his contributions to this research. In December of the same year, the two parties also published their joint research findings in the international journal Nature.
A POSTECH official stated, "The visit by Professor Baker and his wife served as a great source of inspiration for our students and faculty," adding, "We hope this lecture series will establish itself as a representative academic event commemorating the university's 40th anniversary."
