나는 가난한 농촌(전남 담양군 수북면) 출신으로, 나의 인생은 좁은 길, 길 없는 길로 내몰렸었다. 인적(人跡)이 뜸한 곳에서 유영(遊泳)해야만 했다. 줄곧 언론계 비주류(非主流)에서 살았다.
한국에선 생소(生疎)했던 르포 라이터라는 프리랜서, 주간신문 기자, 주간신문 편집국장(토요신문-일요서울), 주간신문 발행인(주간현대-사건의 내막), 타블로이드판 일간신문(펜 그리고 자유) 오너(社主), 인터넷신문 발행인(브레이크뉴스 사주)으로 살았다. 모두, 생소한 직업군(職業群)들이었다.

지난 2003년부터 인터넷신문 브레이크뉴스 발행인으로 삶의 대부분 시간을 투척(投擲)해왔다. 인터넷 신문의 발행은 '길 없는 길'의 시작이었다. 여기서부터, 나의 존재는 언론의 주류(主流)로 바뀌기 시작했다. 나는 새로운 언론권력의 주류 자리를 확보했다. 인터넷 신문의 특성상, 발행이 용이 하다는 점 때문에 종이신문 시대처럼 큰 권력의 자리는 아닐지 모른다. 그래도 새로운 인터넷 문명(文明)은 나에게 주류(主流)의 자리를 안겨줬다.
그런 점에서 신이 있다면, 나는 그 신이 만들어 낸 '특수인간(特殊人間)'일 수 있다. 좁은 길, 한 번도 가 보지 않은 척박한 직업의 현장으로 내 몰리는 인생살이였기 때문이다. 어느 순간 나는 새문명의 선발대로 차출(差出) 당해있었음을 발견할 수 있었다. 광폭적(廣幅的)인 인터넷 세상이 만들어진 시점은 그리 멀지 않다.
나는 지난 23년 간 인터넷 세상에서 유영(遊泳)했다. 인터넷 1세대이다. 그 사이, 광풍(狂風)이 휘몰아 쳤다. 나는 이 시대가 만든 '특수인간'이 됐다. 나의 직전 세대는 인터넷이 무언지, 깜깜하게 모르고 이 세상을 살다가, 저 세상으로 떠났기 때문이다. 인터넷 세상의 특수인간이 해온 일이란 과연 무얼까? 신(新) 문명을 이끌어온 리더라는 사실이다. 그 사이, 과거에 존재하지 않았던 새로운 세상이 창조(創造) 되었다. 나는 새로이 열리고 있는, 글로벌(국제적인) 언론산업-정보산업의 주체(主體)였음을 고백한다.
