브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 인천국제공항공사는 국토교통부와 미국 국토안보부의 주도 하에 15일부터 ‘위탁수하물 원격검색(International Remote Baggage Screening, IRBS)’ 서비스 대상 노선을 기존 애틀랜타 노선에서 미니애폴리스, 디트로이트 노선으로 확대 적용한다고 밝혔다.
‘위탁수하물 원격검색(IRBS)’은 인천공항에서 위탁한 수하물의 엑스선 이미지를 미국 측 보안당국에 사전에 전달해 원격으로 보안 검색을 완료하는 시스템이다.
이를 통해 여객은 미국 도착 시 별도의 수하물 재검색 절차 없이 곧바로 환승 또는 입국 절차를 진행할 수 있어 이용 편의가 크게 향상된다.
공사는 지난해 8월 인천-애틀랜타 노선에 IRBS 서비스를 최초 도입한 이후, 기존 보안검색·수하물처리 시스템과 IRBS 시스템을 정교하게 연계하고, 공사·미 보안당국·항공사 간 긴밀한 협력 네트워크를 구축하며 시스템 운영의 안정성을 높여왔다.
이번 IRBS 서비스 대상 노선 확대는 국토부, 미국 교통안전청(TSA), 미국 관세국경보호국(CBP) 간 이러한 노력으로 축적된 한미 양국 간 높은 항공보안 신뢰를 바탕으로 추진됐다.
향후 공사는 주무부처인 국토부를 지원해 연내에 시애틀, 로스앤젤레스 노선까지 IRBS 서비스를 확장, 더 많은 여객이 미국 도착 시 추가적인 보안 검색 없이 ‘끊김 없는 여정(Seamless Journey)’을 경험하게 될 것으로 기대된다.
인천국제공항공사 조용수 운항본부장은 “IRBS는 기존 보안검색 패러다임을 근본적으로 전환한 첨단 시스템으로, 미주행 여객의 편의성을 획기적으로 향상시키며 인천공항의 허브 경쟁력 강화에도 기여할 것”이라며 “앞으로도 인천공항은 글로벌 공항 간 신뢰를 기반으로 긴밀한 보안 협력을 통해 세계적인 항공보안 선도 공항으로 나아가겠다”고 말했다.
