JTBC는 20일 “지상파 방송 중 우선 KBS와 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’을 공동중계하는 데 합의했다”고 밝혔다.
이로써 오는 6월 열리는 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’ 대회는 종합편성채널(JTBC)과 지상파(KBS) 모두에서 시청할 수 있게 됐다.
또한 JTBC는 다른 지상파 방송사들에도 KBS와 합의한 같은 조건으로 최종 제안을 했다고 덧붙였다. 그 결과에 따라 월드컵 중계 채널은 더 늘어날 수 있다.
JTBC는 앞서 지난 2월 ‘2026 밀라노 코르티나 동계올림픽’을 단독 중계한 바 있다. 당시에도 법이 정한 보편적 시청권은 보장됐지만, 지상파만 받아보는 ‘직접 수신 가구’에 대한 배려도 필요하다는 지적이 나왔다.
이에 따라 JTBC는 지상파 방송들과 지속적인 협상을 벌여왔다. 그 결과, 공영방송 KBS와의 협상이 성사되면서 국민의 시청권 침해 우려는 해소됐다.
한편, JTBC는 MBC와 SBS와의 협상도 추가적으로 이어나간다는 방침이다.
