브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미국 백악관은 3일(현지시간) 저녁 얀센 코로나19 백신 100만회분이 한국으로 향한다고 밝혔다.
백악관 홈페이지 발언록에 따르면 제프 자이언츠 백악관 코로나19 조정관은 이날 브리핑에서 "바이든 대통령이 얀센·존슨앤드존슨 백신 100만회분을 한국에 제공하기로 약속했다"며 "이 백신은 캘리포니아로 이동한 후 항공기에 실려 오늘 저녁 한국으로 떠날 것"이라고 밝혔다.
그는 100만회분의 백신이 접종을 신청한 한국인들에게 희망과 구명 보호를 가져다 줄 것이라고 덧붙였다.
이날 브리핑에서 '왜 국제 백신 공급 프로젝트인 코백스(COVAX)를 통해 공유하지 않고 한국에 직접 제공하느냐'는 기자의 질문에 제이크 설리번 백악관 국가안보보좌관은 "한국의 상황은 특별하다. 문재인 대통령이 미국 방문 시 조 바이든 대통령이 말했듯 이번 백신 제공 목적은 사실 미군과 미군과 함께 복무하는 병력을 보호하는 것이다. 그래서 이건 특별한 사례로 봐달라"고 설명했다.
바이든 대통령은 앞서 총 8000만회분의 백신을 전 세계와 공유하겠다고 밝히며 이 가운데 2500만회분의 구체적인 배분 계획을 밝혔다. 2500만회분의 75% 이상인 1900만회분은 국제 백신 공급 프로젝트 코백스(COVAX)를 통해 공급한다고 했다.
이와 관련 설리번 보좌관은 "75% 이상을 코백스를 통해 공유하면서도 필요에 따라 코백스 외에도 백신 할당을 유지한다. 한국도 그런 사례 중 하나다"라고 부연했다.
그는 또한 "미국은 백신을 제공하는 어떤 나라에도 아무것도 요구하지 않는다"면서 "우리는 양보를 이끌어내려 하지 않는다. 우리는 갈취하지 않는다"고 어떠한 대가를 받고서 특별 공급하는 게 아니라고 강조했다.
그러면서 "우리는 다른 나라들이 하는 방식처럼 조건을 부과하는 게 아니다. 우린 그런 것들을 하지 않고 있다. 백신 제공 목적은 오직 공중보건 개선과 코로나19 팬데믹(세계적 대유행) 종식"이라고 거듭 강조했다.
한편 바이든 대통령은 지난달 한미 정상회담 후 공동기자회견에서 한국군을 위해 55만명분의 백신을 제공하겠다고 발표했다. 그러나 당초 발표보다 약 두 배에 달하는 물량을 제공하는 셈이다.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said, "The situation in South Korea is special. "The United States does not require anything from any country that provides the vaccine," he said. "We are not trying to make concessions. We do not extort," he said, stressing that it is not a special supply at any cost.
"We don't impose conditions the way other countries do. We are not doing such things. "The purpose of providing vaccines is only to improve public health and end the Covid-19 pandemic."
Biden announced at a joint press conference after the South Korea-U.S. summit last month that he would provide 550,000 South Korean troops with a vaccine. However it is providing about twice as much supplies as its original announcement.
