브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미국 식품의약국(FDA)이 화이자 코로나19백신을 정식 승인했다. 이전까지는 긴급사용승인(EUA)만 받은 상태였으나, FDA가 정식 승인하며 첫 코로나19 백신이 됐다.
조 바이든 미국 대통령은 23일(현지시간) 이에 대해 "화이자와 모더나, 얀센(존슨앤드존슨백신) 3종 모두 FDA의 엄격한 긴급사용 기준을 충족했지만 이번 승인은 이 백신이 안전하고 효과적이라는 확신을 더할 것"이라며 "아직도 백신 접종을 하지 않았다면 이제 접종할 때가 왔다"고 강조했다.
화이자 CEO인 앨버트 불라도 이날 성명 발표를 통해 "전 세계에서 가장 존중받는 기관인 FDA가 전면 승인을 했다"라고 강조하며 "백신 접종은 생명 보호와 집단 면역 달성을 도울 최고의 도구이다. 어떤 의약품도 이토록 많은 사람들에게 테스트되지 않았을 것이다. 맞기를 주저해 온 사람들이 이제는 자신들의 몫을 맞으리라 기대한다"고 했다.
불라 CEO는 또한 "델타 변이, 그리고 접종 6개월 이후부터는 면역력이 줄어들기 시작한다는 사실 때문에 부스터 샷이 필요할 것"이라며 "실제 세계적인 데이터를 통해 우리는 부스터 샷이 필요하다는 사실을 깨달았다"고 말했다.
그는 또한 "델타 변이에 특화한 백신도 만드는 중"이라면서 델타 특화 백신보다 부스터샷이 더욱 효과적이라고 덧붙였다.
한편 미국은 이달 22일 기준으로 성인 인구 62%가 백신 접종을 마쳤다. 하지만 백신 접종 자체를 거부하는 사람들 때문에 접종 속도는 둔화세다. 여기에 더해 전파력이 강한 델타 변이가 퍼지면서 일일 신규 확진자 수는 지난 1월 이래 최다치를 보이고 있다.
이 때문에 미국 보건당국은 FDA의 정식 승인으로 화이자 백신의 안정성이 다시한번 입증됐기 때문에 더 많은 학교와 직장 등에서 백신 접종을 의무화할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
미국 비영리단체 카이저 패밀리 파운데이션(KFF)은 "아직 백신을 맞지 않은 미국인 10명 중 3명은 전면 승인이 떨어진다면 접종을 할 수도 있다는 의사를 나타냈다"는 여론조사를 결과를 발표하기도 했다.

No medicine would have been tested on this many people. "People who have been hesitant to get hit now expect to get their share."
"We'll need booster shots because of the delta mutation and the fact that immunity starts to decline six months after the vaccination," Bulla said. "We've actually learned from global data that we need booster shots.
"We're making a vaccine that's specific to delta mutations," he said, adding that booster shots are more effective than delta-specific vaccines.
In the U.S., 62 percent of the adult population had been vaccinated as of Monday. However, the rate of vaccination is slowing down due to people who refuse to vaccinate themselves. In addition, the daily number of new confirmed cases has been the highest since January as delta variations with strong propagation power spread.
For this reason, U.S. health authorities expect vaccinations to be mandatory at more schools and workplaces as the FDA's formal approval has once again proven the stability of the Pfizer vaccine.
The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), a non-profit organization in the U.S., released a poll that said, "Three out of 10 Americans who have not yet been vaccinated may be vaccinated if their full approval falls."
