[브레이크뉴스=이성용기자] 진주제일중학교는 14일 오후 박종훈 경상남도교육감, 신종우 진주부시장, 체육계 및 학교 관계자가 참석한 가운데 펜싱장 개관식을 가졌다.
진주제일중학교 펜싱경기장은 총사업비 32억 2천여만 원을 들여 주차장 1, 2층과 3층 펜싱장 연면적 1,742㎡ 규모로 지난 12월 22일 준공됐다.
2006년에 창단한 진주제일중학교 펜싱부는 세계적인 선수인 올림픽 메달리스트 박상영(4회, 2016 리우올림픽 에페 개인 금메달, 2021 도쿄올림픽 에페 단체 동메달) 선수를 비롯해 현재 국가대표인 정재원(6회) 선수, 경남체육회 소속 정세윤(7회) 선수를 길러낸 펜싱 명문 학교다.

진주제일중 펜싱부는 그동안 전용 펜싱장이 없어 일반체육관에서 어렵게 훈련을 해왔다. 이번에 전용 펜싱장이 준공되면서 선수 육성의 기반을 갖추게 됐다.
조창현 진주제일중학교장은 “우리 학생선수들이 안전하고 쾌적한 환경에서 성장할 수 있는 기반 조성에 역점을 뒀다. 펜싱 인재 양성뿐만 아니라 일반학생들의 생활펜싱교육으로 체력단련과 집중력 향상, 예절교육을 체득하는 기회를 만들겠다.”고 말했다.
박종훈 교육감은 “진주제일중학교 동문인 박상영 선수를 비롯해 대한민국 펜싱 선수들이 올림픽에서 보여준 투혼과 열정이 우리 국민의 가슴속에 깊이 새겨져 있다. 앞으로 이곳 펜싱장에서 더 큰 감동으로 대한민국 국민의 마음을 다시 울릴, 새로운 펜싱영웅이 탄생하길 기대한다.”고 말했다.
